Warning: picture of dead snake.

Hollychan Feb 26, 2008 07:44 PM

One of the reporters that I work with at the tv station sent this picture from his/her cameraphone. I don't know which one it was, I don't know exactly where this was taken, though it looks like the back step at the tv station. I don't even know if the reporter was the person who killed it, but I did ask in a reply email. I'm terribly sorry that the snake is dead, I'll find out what occured there, but could someone help me identify it? We had a ton of rain last week here in the Panhandle of Florida, so I'm not surprised that someone found a snake. :P

I feel really bad for the little guy. From my limited snake knowledge, it doesn't look like a poisonous snake. I don't have any better pictures.

Okay, I've got the picture now, sorry about that. I heard back from the reporter. He found the snake at his house. He's not an animal person in any way, shape, or form. >_< He did kill the snake. I would have preferred he call me, I don't live very far from him, I would've gladly come and gotten the snake.

Harmless, Souther Black Racer.

Hollychan Feb 26, 2008 08:33 PM

Yeah, that's what I thought. I told him, but he doesn't care, like I said, he's not an animal person at all. When I get back to work tomorrow, I'm going to make sure I send out a memo that if anyone else finds a snake, they're welcome to call me and I'll come get it. I've got a snake hook, thick gloves, etc. I'd much rather do that than have them randomly killing snakes. I can even get to much less populated areas here, so if they do find a poisonous snake, I can release it away from human contact. Our animal control sucks here, or I'd suggest they call them. Poor little black racer.

Unless you really know what you are doing, it would be best just leave the venomous ones alone. Just too many ways to get bit. Justice and Trevor would be upset by having to visit Mom at the hospital.

That's taking a pretty good chance on something going wrong with a limited snake experience Holly, I'd hate to hear about something bad happening to you. I know you have the best intensions in the world, but do your best to leave the "hot" stuff to someone that has dealt with them before. Maybe you could do some researching in your area, and try locating someone who does deal with venomous animals(snakes) in your area BEFORE there is a real panic to need one, that way you know exactly who to call just in case it ever DOES happen.

best regards, ~Doug

You guys are sweet, but the idea that I haven't had to relocate and deal with hot herps before almost made me giggle. I was born in, and mostly raised in, Florida. We've always lived "in the country" since I have a horse. Of course, country here is filled-in swamp. My current yard (1 1/2 acres) usually has moccasins and pygmy rattlers. After wrestling and relocating a cottonmouth, who was as big around as my calf, and moving countless pain-in-the-butt pygmies out of my yard, I think I've got a bit of experience with the local hots.

Obviously, I also don't agree with a beginner trying to deal with poisonous snakes. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. But, I'm not a kid and I've been dealing with our local hot herps since '89.

Thanks, though, guys.

Okay Holly, just trying to make sure you were aware of things.

Oh, I forgot to add in my other post, that the majority of any pest snake calls are often going to be from people swearing the snake is venomous anyway,.....quote "it flattened it's head, and rattled it's tail at me,.....so it's definitely "poisonous",..right??........what a classic..LOL!

I'm sorry, as much as it upsets us herp people, it is not in any way illegal to kill a racer in Florida.....

Holly: Technically, if you do not have a venomous reptile permit, it is not legal for you to capture a venomous snake here in Florida.

Good thing I'm friends with our local FWC officers.

They'd rather see me haul a hot out of my yard and into the woods than watch its head get chopped off. I can't leave poisonous ones in the yard, I have a horse and two toddlers. If our animal control was worth a s**t, I'd get them to take care of them, but they aren't.
They won't even come get stray dogs. Last time I called about a cottonmouth, they hung up on me. :P
