bulls saved!

max Aug 27, 2003 09:41 PM

hi, i would first of all like to say road cruising wich is not may to talk about here in parker, colorado, but i have picked up two very nice bulls in the last two nights. one of them about 10 minutes ago. a very nice three footer probably from last year. the other a monster for this area, he is about fiv and a half feet and thick as they come for these colorado bulls. nothing to the west texas bulls i used to catch. i am taking them to a large ranch a few miles away where there are no roads for them to end there lives. i have seen that way too much this year and it kills me to see any type of pit killed. and how do you post pics. i have some nice pics of my capes and these bulls i'd like to show. thanks and and to all who live for pituophis good night!

I am no expert! But I do remember someone, who sounded as if he was an expert or at least he was quoting one, say that relocated snakes rarely survive. I cannot quote the statistics given but it was surprising to me to learn that the survival rate was so low even when the relocation was not very far.

Welome Max, I myself have had some experience with road cruising in Colorada during the 80's. For the most part in areas North of Denver toward Greeley in the West. Where exactly is Parker Located? We never collected but did like to take pics.

Colorado bulls are on average much smaller than Texas Bulls. One evening though as I was making just that comment to a Colorado native. We were actually cruising at the time we came upon a huge DOR bull. As you would have it, it was close to 6' and very girthy. Never did come across a large one alive though.

Just a quick comment in regards to releasing herps from one area into another. I have read many views on such to the pros and cons of doing this. One example concerning my wife's interest in turtles and tortoises. We currently reside in Florida where (rumor as it) people are constantly releasing herps back into the wild. As their intentions are meant in good will there is always a chance of introducing something back to the wild with the relaese of these reptiles. Something that these reptiles may have not had prior to their collection that could now spread to wild populations.

There are several studies of just that concerning these shelled herps being undertaken right now as we speak. I believe now I need to give more attention to my wife when she speaks of such things so that I could have supplied some specifics as they fail my memory at this moment.

Just food for thought, especially if temporary containment has any association with other herps you may be keeping in your personal collection.

It is unfortunate though to endure seeing more DOR reptiles though than living reptiles in any environment. I hope this is not becomming the case in your area as it has become the norm in ours.

I do hear though the burms and iggys are doing well here but unfortunately not the Florida Box turtle.

Thanks, Rich Hebron

thanks for your concern, but the are they'll be let off is just a large ranch close to where i found them. there are bull and rattlers and yelllow bellied racers alredy there so i know there is food enough. it would probably have some of their reletives there it is just big enough to where road death will be less likely for them. i have hearped in florida around jacksonville, a great place. i also heard there are a population of nile monitors on a small island in florida by the keys, have you heard anything on the subject, thanks

Click on the "Photo Gallery" link near the top of the page. Look for an option that says "Upload Photos." Once you have them uploaded to your account, post a new message, and on the bottom of the page, there should be an option to post images that you've uploaded. It's pretty self-explanatory really.

I'd love to see those pics! I wish I lived in a place with bulls...

I saved a catenifer out here in Cali, but most of them I find are already dead. The one I saved was small, about 2 feet in length and not very thick in diameter. The DOR specimens were all about 3-4 feet. It was unfortunate that I didnt find them in time.
