how many in 1 viv

rose_delight Feb 27, 2008 03:38 PM

i currently have a female beardie she is 4 months old, but i was looking into getting a male aswell. i am worried though as i am unsure if they can go in the viv together. we are having a new viv next week it will be 48"x18"x18".alo can i have a male and female living together as unsure if they will fight or mate early as i dont want to stress my female, and i read somewhere that it an shorten their lives if mate before one year (unsure if this is true)i dont want her to be a baby machine and so would it be stressfull for her if there was a male with her as would he want to mate all the time?

Do not put a male and female in together at 4 months breeding could kill her. I wait til about 1 1/2 yrs for breeding and only let my male in for set amount of time or he will dog her and stress her out and even as an adult could still kill her breeding is sometimes a pretty nasty affair. Also once bred females store sperm so another breeding usually isn't necessary. i house some female together but even this sometimes isn't great as dominant females are also sometimes nasty toward other dragons

That cage is too small for a single adult bearded dragon...not wide enough at all...it should have a width of 24" at least (floor space of 48"x24" for single adult dragon, or larger. Bigger if more than one will be housed).

At 4 months of age, breeding is the last thing you want to do...you could put a male of the same age and size..but you will have to separate by the time she's 6 months anyway...to ensure no early breeding. Males tend to mature faster than females and females are better if not bred at all in their first year..with 14 months being minimal age, 18" better. This ensures the female is finished growing and won't be using up resources to produce eggs...some females though, will produce eggs regardless of being under the idea age for mating, though these will be infertile eggs.

Males and females can get along but its best to have a single male to two females, so he doesn't pester the same female as much...even two females can cause serious injuries to eachother when housed together...so in general, its best to keep them separated...or provide larger than minimum sized cages (5'x3', or 4'x4'floor dimensions is great for 2-3 adult dragons.

i no about the viv but its only a temp one as the one we have at the mo is one we are lending from my dad. we are having the bigger one as a temp thing until we move as dont have anywhere to put a bigger viv at the moment. as for haing another drago after reading the replys i will stick to my lovely little "scales" and not bother with a male as like i put in my original post i want them as pets and not for breeding. maybe when we move i will get a male in a seperate viv.
