digging constantly!!

matt068 Feb 27, 2008 04:13 PM

My female I believe was bred about 3 weeks ago she has been digging for the last week w/out stopping I see no outward signs she has eggs yet, as she has shown b4 any ideas why she's digging so excessively?

She could be carrying infertile eggs. Maybe the breeding wasn't successful. Also, I have heard of females having their first clutches be infertile, but I have never had that happen. Giver a nesting set up and see what happens.

Is this her first year? or has she laid eggs before?

She has laid eggs b4 3 clutches last yr but I've never seen her like this I mean constantly digging appetite is nonexistent and i have always been able to see her carrying the eggs this time no, go figure any input greatly appreciated. This is the first yr she has been bred or in w/ my new male last yrs clutches infertile her sister had 18 eggs of which I got 11 to hatch out on her first clutch

I would put her in a nest box and see what happens. Sometimes they dig and stop eating early before they are ready to lay. I think they get confused about what their body is trying to tell them. I have one acting the same as yours right now but I know it is too early for her to lay eggs yet.

Sounds like shes gravid.

If you cannot feel the eggs, she is likely carrying and infertile clutch.

You said the male is a new guy. Perhaps he didn't get a successful breeding in before she produced.
Most every female I have seen stops eating entirely before laying.

Put her in a nest box to prevent the risk of her getting egg bound.
