Albino Retic went to the Vet today

Slacker6848 Feb 27, 2008 06:40 PM

I had to take my lav albino retic into the vet today, she's only about 5 1/2 ft, she started to queeze last night and stopped and had a minor whistle sound when she breathed, well all and all, SHE was sold to me as a female and the vet probed her and SHE became a HE, all is well on that tho, i wasn't planning to breed him, and he also has a minor RI and is on Amiglyde-v, has anyone had any experience using this? and does it work good? i gotta give injections every 3 days with it. but other then that she did real well, kinda upsetting since this is my first snake I've had to get an RI.

glad it's alteast treatable and we'll see how it goes

Thanks
Zack

of the human antibiotic amikacin. It is an aminoglycoside class antibiotic that has a fairly wide spectrum of activity against many gram negative and a few gram positive bacteria. Amikacin has about the widest spectrum of activity of all the aminoglycosides. It is a potent and very effective antibiotic against most bacterial RI’s and stomatitis (mouth rot) in reptiles, but it has the drawback of being somewhat toxic, and proper dosing is very important. Clean and highly drinkable water (changed daily) must be available at all times when using aminoglycosides to maintain increased kidney function, however artificial hydration has not shown to be needed. As such, it should not be used with a dehydrated animal. If care is taken under a vets direction, it can be used quite safely. Additionally, blood and borneo short-tail pythons are very sensitive to the aminoglycosides, and after a standard loading dosage, all subsequent doses need to be cut in half for these species. Above average humidity should be maintained throughout the treatment period, in the 70 to 75% range at the minimum. Additionally, you should try to maintain the cage humidity with a healthy tropical python above 60%. If there wasn’t much mucous in the mouth then you probably caught it early and there shouldn’t be any problems. I have used it with good results in the past and never had any problems with it when dosed appropriately.

Thanks Kelly for the Detailed info on the med, i looked it up and got kinda worried because it menchioned kidney problems, but i'll make sure to increase the humidity and all that. the vet i took him to is David Doherty from the woodlands tx. he said it was just a little mucus in the mouth so it's not too bad.

Thanks

Kelly, so would it be a good idea to soak her daily while giving this medication too?

Thanks
Zack

to answer the soaking question--

SOAK SOAK SOAK!

I would not soak everyday, unless the snake is used to being handled everyday-- that can lead to more stress which can have the opposite effect.

I have cages large enough to accomidate a kiddy pool-- that is not their all the time water source but i get a lot of burms with RI's and have built my cages to hold a kiddy pool jsut for this occasion.

We soak on days we give the shots-- clean the tub out, fill it and if the snake is cooperative, soak them-- usually they drink and climb out (and make a mess)-- we put them back in the cage with the kiddy pool and the majority of the time- we find them in the pool on their own-- they know what they need....

anyway-- if you dont have a way to give him a kiddy pool-- I say soak on the days of the injections-- either before or after, depending on the attitude... i've never had one get cranky about an injection so we soak after...

just my method-- others do different things-- i'm no "expert" but i have had many a burm, retic, and everything else with a URI-- basically all we get in the rescue world...

good luck with that beauty-- wish one would come through the rescue... only way i'll get to have one... would make a fantastic educational creature!

One last comment,

make sure you give the injections as best you can into the muscle on either side of the midline spine and make sure the shot is given in the cephalad or front one third of the snakes body. Snakes have a renal portal recirculation of blood flow to help with digesting large food bolus feeding patterns and if a medicine is given in the lower half of the snake, it might lead to higher concentrations of potentially renal/kidney toxic medications recirculating through the kidneys

just something i read over the years in herp vet literature

Thanks for all the info, this is the first time i've had to give injections to a snake, all my other ones never have had a problem and my rescued burm had such a mild URI that meds were not needed and she overcomed it herself. the vet did let me know about the shots in the upper part of the body. since my gf and friends have never given animals shots i work with him with my mom while i hold him my mom will give him the shot since vaccinates all our other animals. He's use to being handled alot and seems to be perfectly ok with it and has never seemed to stress out but very rarely on which i return him to his cage and let him be for a few days to de-stress. He's still young, just a yearling so i've just been working to make sure hi stays docile so maybe every other day handling.

Thanks again for all the info and i'll keep you all updated on how it's going

Zack

From someone going through this right now, the bath was a great idea. This helped greatly. I used large rubbermaid containers. I got tired of cleaning the tub all the time upstairs not to mention all the water dripping.

Good Luck.

ok thanks, for now i'm going to give her a mandatory soak every 1-2 days which she doesnt seem to mind much and give her a nice size dish in there for her to soak at her own will.
