first clutch, have a Q

ohexotics Feb 27, 2008 09:23 PM

I acquired a gravid wc female & she had her clutch last night.

I was *almost* ready, the incubator was setup and ready, but I have a question regarding where to have the probe.

Everything I read says to have the probe where the eggs are. Well, the eggs are in a container with vermiculite & a small air hole. That is inside the incubator. Does the probe go inside the tupperware container, or just inside the incubator?

And 88 degrees is a good base temp correct? Will post a pic later, I'm excited to have this chance, I don't wanna screw it up

Put the temp probe in the box with the eggs. I try and place it ontop of an egg that will result in it being at the midpoint. I make sure the cord has some slack so condensation will not run down it directly onto the eggs. Also, I place a second digital thermometer(sp?) in the box and I place a third glass thermometer on the outside of the box.

What type of incubator are you using? Alot of starters (I did) use the Havobator. With this you have to be VERY careful if using the 'wafer' controller. Most people replace this with a high quality controller, ie; Herpstat, Helix, Johnson, etc..

The optimal temperature is 89-90 degreesF, however, a degree or so either way will be ok and small fluctuations of 3-5 degrees are not uncommmon if using a 'wafer' type controller. The steadier the better though.

Good luck!
