Bad, Bad, Worse, Worst

medyssa Feb 27, 2008 10:04 PM

Tonight was bad within two minutes of me walking through the front door. I had been gone for two nights staying at my boyfriends house and I figured everyone would be ok.

First, my stepdad called me letting me know that Dude had gotten out of his cage (mysteriously unlocked, I remember checking everything before leaving Sunday night) and was trying to eat my birds. He was able to put him back in a cage.

Second, when I walked in my room an hour later, I got to see Dudette out of her cage on the floor.

Third, Dudette was eating my male bird, Tickle.

Fourth, Sable died. I don't know why. I know she regurged but she had warmth, water, nothing should have gone wrong. Remember what you told me the other day Dave? No big deal with the regurg, so we thought.

I'm a bit depressed at the moment.

Oh man! Jess, that is some rough luck you have been having lately. I'm so sorry to hear about your losses. Hopefully this will be the last of a run of bad luck and things will start heading back upward.

That's horrible. I'm really sorry for your losses, must be heartbreaking.

Were Dude and Dudette in the same cage?

Again, sorry for your loss, unfortunately it happens sometimes.

Thanks,
Ed

Because of the move I had the snakes a bit spread out, some were in containers stacked on my bookshelf, Dudette was in the middle of a stack of three with my corn snake on top, she must have muscled out and heard the birds twittering. She is possibly gravid and right now has an absolutely voiracious appetite! Dude was in my cage tower, but the door was unlocked.
I think I am better after a night's sleep. I was hardest hit by Sable dying, she was in her container, secure, warm, she had water. I just don't know what happened there. That was the biggest shock.

I definitely understand, when I had to "put down" my 9 year old
Boa that I had raised from a baby, it was one of the worst days of my life. Don't beat yourself up, sounds like you didn't do anything wrong with Sable. Not sure if it's feasible, but
I guess the only way to even possibly figure out what happened is to have a qualified vet do a necropsy.

Sorry again,
Ed

I've already buried her, sadly it was already dark at the time and because my room was so warm they had begun to decompose and the smell was bad. I had to put all three in the same hole because it was so late. I wonder what someone will think if they ever find the skeletons: a parrotlet, a baby snake and an adult snake.
