zoegod Aug 27, 2003 10:29 PM

my current terrarium project for my sailfin lizard Godzoela is almost finished but i have a problem with my back wall. please help me.

i would like to place some of our left over red slate bricks on my back WOOD wall.( as seen on the picture)

i think if i use cement and wood dont match. what other adhesive could i use to hold the bricks on the wood wall?

anyone who could give me advice here? my wood is a 3/4 inch thick board.

Go to the hardware store and buy cement dye. It comes in almost every color, and mix to the color you want...it dries a bit lighter than it looks...make some and test it out...but its gonna make the cage real heavy

The best thing that I could recommend to you is to take those bricks and cut them down to approx 3/8" thick. You can rent a table saw for masonry for around $60 a day from most rental companies. Once the brick is cut down apply a coat of thin set tile adhesive/grout to the back wall then start applying the bricks to the adhesive bed. After that go back with some type of light weight tile mortar or grout to "Grout" in the spaces between the brick. Let the grout cure and off gas for a minimum of 48 hours. When the grout dries I would put a good coat of an acrylic sealer or polyurethane on the grout and brick. Then wait another several days for everything to "cure". The cage is going to be VERY heavy!

Antoher lighter option is to buy the brick look wall paper and apply polyurethane over it or buy a plastic look alike brick and put those on the wall.

you can also buy bricks that are cut down to around half the thickness. You should be able to get them at any home center. also i would put some metal mesh on the back so the bricks have somthing to hold to.

I've never done it, but wouldn't it be pretty simple to make an artificial brick wall with styrofoam? Just a thought.

use liquid nails,it holds almost anything together and its cheap(usually around 5$ at homedepot)and it comes clear or beize. shold hold those bricks no problem as i glued much bigger and heavier things and there still together 3 years later just as strong
