Female corn ready to breed

wvherp Feb 28, 2008 01:00 PM

How long after a female corn sheds will she be able to mate? Will the ability to mate last a certain time frame, like a couple of days, or will she be able to mate a couple of weeks after the shed? The male she is to mate with may not come out of cooling for a couple of weeks and she is scheduled to start coming out this weekend. Should I hold her off until the male is ready?

There is a "window of opportunity" when there are follicles present and matings are most likely to be fertile. In the "real world," male snakes are often out of hibernation before females. Most breeders bring their snakes out of hibernation at the same time. I'd bring the male up the same time as the female. I've had males sucessfully breed with only three weeks of cooling and there's many breeders who don't cool their snakes at all, as natural light cycles may play a bigger role in triggering breeding than cooling.

The male is not mine and the owner plans on bringing him out beginning next weekend. I will probably wait and bring her out at that time as you suggest.
Thanks

Ah ha!

I was wondering why the heck you weren't bringing them up at the same time - that breeding arrangement explains everything.

Yep, I'd do the same thing - just keep the female cooled until the male is out of brumation - that will probably give you the best odds at getting fertile eggs.

Good luck!

Hey Ti,That's a cool lookin' corn! Is she a locality specific? If so, where from? Thanks!, Jeff

Hey Jeff,

That's actually a rootbeer that I produced several years ago. It looks like she's gravid again too. So no, unfortunately it's not a "pure" locality-specific snake.

By the way that reverse Okeetee I got from you is doing fantastic. Here's a pic I took of him today. Thanks again for supplying me with a great snake!
