vet doublecheck. subcutaneous fluids.

mAli Feb 28, 2008 02:43 PM

Can I get some verification please? I got a uro and the direct fecal was negative, the float revealed coccidia. Eating very little and either defficating small amounts or the stools are runny. Got the meds. Tri-meth sulfa daily 2 weeks. The animal is a bit dehydrated and got subcutaneous injections today at the vet. How often should subcutaneous injections be administered to maintain hydration during/after treatment? Or is once enough? No bones showing, no sunken eyes, tail is a little soft but still some fat reserves, skin is dry, belly pretty empty. The uro is acting pretty normal otherwise. Not lethargic. Lounges in morning, active midday, lounges rest of day. Eats from hand and when fresh greens are placed in cage. Otherwise not eating good. Can I get an experience call? Not feeling overly secure with treatment plan, thinking daily subQ's is a bit excessive.Or is it? Uro will not eat berries or drink water. Temps are correct.

I am not an experienced uro breeder but have bred beardies. Whenever my uro's have gone to the vet.. once for ingesting fertilizer and was seizuring BADLY the vet had injected fluids but only twice I believe. She survived amazingly b/c i was sure she was not goin to make it. I just rescued a very emaciated beardie and she was injected with fluids at the vet but only once. I'd say that injecting the lizard with fluids EVERY day sounds like too much! if it's really emaciated and not eating at all I mean ok but not every day. plus you said the lizard is eating greens? so that's good at least. Once they stop eating at all is the problem. so i'm not an expert, but that's my opinion

Another NON-expert opinion here. All I can really share is the experience I had with one animal - a WC adult Saharan. He was fairly thin on arrival and wouldn't eat. Got much thinner in the couple weeks after that. Fecal showed excessive pinworms and coccidia. He was a wreck, all told. Vet gave him one injection of sub-Q fluids, and I administered the meds for the parasites. Only the one instance of sub-Q fluids was needed. He started eating on his own shortly thereafter. Before and way after:

I had a juvie Saharan that went on a hunger strike for a couple of weeks and refused to drink anything. I watched her get too thin for my comfort and more lethargic every day. After talking with experts online and by phone, I took her to a local reptile vet who gave her one injection of fluids. She got home from the vet visit and started running around like crazy, eating everything in sight, and has since doubled her body weight. If one injection of fluids kick starts your Uro's appetite, that should be enough.

Thanks, yeah she was aggressively eating from my hand afterwards. Looks better too, more alert looking. Now to start the meds.
