Skin Shedding Issue

snotted Feb 28, 2008 10:05 PM

Score another point for the noob here...

My new snake shed on Monday and today has been the first day that he let me handle him. So that's when I noticed that the skin on the last 2 inces of his tail didn't come off during his shed. Any suggestions on what to do for him?

Oh, and how do I post pictures? Someone had asked for pictures on my last post.

Snotted,
What the heck is your real name????? I can't help you with the pix (I'm terribly technologically challenged!!!!!) but this is what I do. I slather on Mineral Oil, let it sit for an hour or so and the skin will come right off. If you don't get tail sheds off, you risk having the snake eventually losing its tail. Now that I've scared you to death get after that tail shed!!!! Good luck!!!

Shalom,

Pat

Oh my goodness, I don't want his tail to rot off! LOL. And where the heck do I find mineral oil? Cleaning supplies at Wal-Mart? I don't know where to look.

Snotted is my unfortunate nickname that my husband gave me when we first met, and it stuck. Story goes is that it was cold outside (we were on a group ski trip to Colorado), and you know how your nose runs when it's cold, and someone told a joke, and when I laughed, I shot snot out of my nose... on my husband... to which he screamed "You snotted on me!" And so the name was born. But you can call me Heather if you want.

You can get Mineral Oil in the Pharmacy section. You can also use water. If you have a container you can put him in, use damp Paper towels. That should loosen the skin.

I spent about an hour using water over his tail. I got some of the skin off but gave up after an hour on the rest. I'll get some mineral oil and give that a go.

This happens to my snakes from time to time, and I'm always able to get that last little bit of skin on the tail off by just wetting my hands and letting them run their tail through my hands. I don't apply very much pressure, but just constantly re-wet my hands and it comes right off after a few passes.

photos have to reside elsewhere online, I use photobucket.com, it's free and you upload your photos to that site, then photobucket gives you the code to insert into your post here.

You can also upload small photos on this site. Click on the Photos tab at the top, then the upload photos tab.

^_^

I also use photobucket a lot too. You'd need the link Photobucket gives you that has the [img] tags on it.

Here are the pictures that everyone has been requesting. I hope this works!* (They're just crappy phone pics right now... I'll take nice professional film shots later.)

Great looking CA king. I looked into them as love the high white types like yours but prefer calmer snakes that dont have the CA king high feeding drive (getting bit) thus opted not to but they are great looking

Oh, and his name is Homestar, by the way. I don't know if I posted that earlier. I'm tired and can't think too well right now. So I'm gonna go hit the sack.
