Ovulating?

PHLdyPayne Feb 29, 2008 06:57 AM

As some of you may remember, I am attempting to breed my Brazilian rainbow boas this season. Started cooling Oct. 16/07 and brought temps down to roughly 73-75F. Introduced the male about a month or two later...observed some copulation.Took him out for about a week to give him a rest and to feed. Put him back in and repeated. Late Mid to Late January, noticed much more copulations. Brought temps back up to normal Feb. 8th /08. Noticed copulation a couple times after that too. However, I have also noticed the female is swelling up a fair bit...more than she should giving the size of prey I have fed her. Male received same size of rat (medium) and didn't show the same bulge..and the bulge is longer, about third of the body between tail and mid body roughly.

Weight when I started cooling for female was 2400g, Male was 2550g.

Her weight when I last weighed her, Feb 20th, was 2550g. Below are pictures I took today of the female. Does she just look full (she is actually bigger now than she was when I separated them last weekend..and I fed her Sunday or Monday)

Above is an overhead view, below is a side view.

I think Dave is right. there is a very good chance she is gravid. However, I would leave the male in with her awhile longer. I let them stay together and even introduce other males until several weeks after males seem totally uninterested in the female.

Ok will keep putting the male in with her... unfortunately I only have one male and one female..so they are stuck with each other for now

whats a good size tub for baby rainbows? Should I go for something great for baby ball pythons? (ie shoebox size, say 12"x7"x4"

Looks pretty gravid to me. I breed them twice and one time the female ate and the other time she didn't, two different females. I bred the same time you did as well in both cases. This year I saw many copulations but female doesn't appear to be gravid. So I will keep introducing them. I think she is gravid and I may have to buy a nice male perhaps. She is stunning red color my favorite.

Thanks. She's a real nice red, not as dark as I have seen in pictures posted here but I do like her color. The dad is a bit more orange than she is..so not sure how the babies will turn out.

When I bred them the male was orange blotched and red bodied, the female was deep red/purple black looking and so where her blotches, the babies where mixed and some peeps where very happy with them, I sold them all unfortunately and the adults died and now I have a new bloodline. I am in need of a male in the future, so I will be eyeballing your babies.
