lesser cayman brac iguanas

Zeus Aug 27, 2003 11:45 PM

hey guys i was just on cyclura.com looking at pictures and realized that i really liked the look of the cayman bracs. why dont we see more posts about these or pictures? are there any for sale? do you need a permit? due to my recent loses i have some extra cage space and would love to get another cyclura and love the look of the bracs so any input would be great and would love to see some pics too. by the way i got bella and cappuccino's(tegu) results back from the vet and they came out clean. they are doing well and are showing no signs of illness. i am watching them like a hawk though.

Hi, I have a lesser cayman iguana. His name is Pete and I have had him since May. He is a really good boy altho not as sociable with strangers as my Tashmoo was. He is very good with us though in the house. He freeroams here in the computer room. You're right, you never see much about these guys for some reason.

for interstate transfer in order to be legal.

Hi, I got Pete from some people in CA that wanted a good home for him. John at Cyclura.com hooked her up with me. We were unsure about the permit situation too. David Blair said there is a permit needed to sell them but if no money changes hands (gifted) that there is no problem. I didnt pay for him. She even paid to ship him here to get him into a good home before they had their first child and moved across the country all in the same month.

I assume that David Blair knows his stuff and we didnt do anything wrong.

your question; "Why don't you see much about these?"

reptileszz Aug 28, 2003 08:33 PM

hmmm, I didnt mean to imply you implied anything. I figured it deserved an explanation. Pete was originally hatched from by David Blair. He is 4 years old. Not implying anything, just saying...

I thought it could be taken as that I was implying yours was illegal. It is really hard to get permits for these animals as Jeff Lemm stated before. Dave is absolutely right as long as there is no economic value to the animal it is ok to cross state lines. However it is still illegal if you get the animals for free and breed it then sell offspring. I went through this with USFW a couple years ago when getting Sauromalus varius from the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum. Even though they were donating the animals to me I had to sign an agreement that I would not sell any progeny. If I did sell progeny the animals I got from the museum would then become illegal because they were used as a means to make me money. A bunch of crap but what can you do about it? Tom

Hi Tom, no hard feelings. I probably was a little defensive as I am getting a little nervous about all the seizures that have been happening more and more often lately.

Pete is definitely only pet material now that Tashmoo is gone. I wasnt really planning on breeding them anyway. So I guess that isnt an issue. The only thing I need is for the girl that shipped him to me to give me a receipt that says he was gifted to me and she still needs to ship me his birth certificate and egg that she got from DB. I'm glad this came up. I will email her today and see if she can to that.

wow he's a beauty. where did you get him and if you dont mind me asking, how much did you pay for him? did you need a permit? i love his face!!

Blair has Caymanensis. Call him, those are his favorites. He will give you all the legal info I am sure.
Caymanensis dont really get the interest Hybrids do, do they. maybe cuz their color is so close to a cuban's

Carole- good looking animal, you should post more pics .

Most often I agree with you,JF, but couldn't be more wrong on the caymanensis..completely different looking and truly spectacular in adulthood. Once you see a large male in his colors you will understand Blair's and my enthusiasm over the species and definately not say they look like cubans. They are fewer in numbers then many of the other cyclura species so I do hope folks get interested in captive breeding and keeping of these guys.
