disinfecting for coccidia

mAli Feb 29, 2008 08:39 PM

very busy with the husbandry chores to say the least... based on my research on disinfecting cages for purposes of eliminating coccidia-chlorhexadine will not work, neither will bleach. only steam cleaning or a 5-10% solution of ammonia will do the trick. (some say 5,some say 10)and you can boil food bowls in water for 20 minutes.thought I would share that.much debate on the subject but most solutions won't work. you need a different disinfectant for different pathogens, eggs, worms etc.

For disinfecting cage i use stuff called ASEPSOL (don't know if it's sold outside Slovenia..not sure if it's our product or foreign)
but after using it, it is neccessary to clean cage thoroughly

how can this happen to begin with? how can it not is more like it.
importers
petstores
other animals-reptiles, birds, and dogs and cats-it gets in their fur,it gets on their feet.
it gets on your feet
it lives in grass where another animal has defficated for weeks
it withstands freezing.
it gets on your hands and clothes
insects and flies
therefore possibly on produce
*another animal can be treated and recover and still carry it*
used enclosures if not disinfected correctly, better off sanitizing, (pain in the butt process)
it is rediculous-i am pissed.
humans don't get it,but the same genus' affect all these animals, even marsupials and chickens.
learn something new everyday.
last but not least-@#!*xxx#@!

Not to mention that it only takes one oocyst surviving the cleaning process to potentially reinfect your lizard. I hate coccidia - I've dealt with it three times now.

Is it viral? Bacterial? Protist?

I don't know but now I found some species in certain genera can infect humans as well. The particular species was not identified. Are you asking which category it falls under or which type of coccidia? Coccidia is protozoan far as I know.
