Hog Isle POS Q's...

charmer Mar 01, 2008 12:26 AM

If anyone here has any experience with breeding hogs, I could use a few insights in how they may differ compared to my BCIs.
I picked this gal up months ago, a gorgeous light colored, bright-tailed proven female (she may not look it in the pics I'll show since she was dark after arrival here and through breeding). My two year (approx) male orange-phase hog who was producing sperm plugs on his bowl, was introduced after quarantine. He bred her for a month solid and lost interest. A couple weeks later after a feeding, started up again for much longer. I did not witness a definite football ovulation, but she did get 'fat' and shed. He bred through her shed and shortly afterward. I thought maybe the job was not done based on that. However, He has since lost interest and she has gained significant weight since. To my semi-experienced eyes, she is definitely gravid. Based on BCI POS counts and her last shed, she would be due April 28th. My biggest question is: do they have the same cycles as BCI in regards to days to birth following POS?
I am experienced enough to accept advice from those with more than myself ;p so feel free to pass any insights. I will be taking pictures of her in her present heavy state soon, but until then.. I will post a pic of her when I thought her to be pre-ov or going into ov while the male was still breeding and before the shed... not the best pic, but bear with me... his efforts to continue breeding gave me doubt, but hopefully he was just an ambitious young male getting the job done. At least he did lose interest shortly after the last (pos?) shed finally.
Here are pics of the two of them...
Early attempted breeding...

Later attempted breeding showing swelling...

One of her alone at about the same time (he was still interested at this point).

Sorry for the somewhat dirty cage, I wanted to get the pic before she retreated to the corner to glare at me again! ;p Not that she is mean tempered, very sweet actually when she isn't eating, but at that time she didn't want to be messed with!
Thanks for looking guys! And for any input! I hope to add more pictures to this thread of her now, as she is much larger and the scales are separating significantly. Big enough that I'm surprised she still has two months to go, given that Hogs have relatively smaller litters than most BCI. Unless the POS is different than I'm basing my guess on, hence the question!

Just hoping someone would notice my post and clarify my POS question regarding Hog Isles...

Don't know that much, but looks like a pre-ov swell to me. Looks good. Don't know the gestation period.
My Central American female looked the same.

Thanks for the reply ;p Was thinking either nobody had any experience with Hogs(optimistic view) or that nobody cared to take the time to shed light on hog breeding/gestation (pessimistic view) LOL! I tend to expect the worst and hope for the best in everything... even silly things like replies on forums!
I appreciate the opinion from an alternate source than my own! ;p The room cooled a bit below usual last night and I found her hugging the hot spot in a fat coil this morning... usually they stay in the middle or cooler end of the cage, since I have the room pretty warm anyway. That was a good sign, since nobody else cared (all the not gravid snakes). I hope to be posting a healthy litter at the end of April if the POS count is the same!
Thanks again!

Once again. My Central American Girl does the exact same thing. So, either we're both doing good, or we're both screwed. lol
