OT, but sort of rainbow-ish...

natsamjosh Mar 01, 2008 11:14 AM

Cage cleaning day, and also I'm now in front of the computer on the phone with Vonage tech support for the 3rd #*(&@& time in 2 days. Anyway, here are a few pics, it was pretty neat how Jack's belly scales refracted the sunlight...

Thanks for looking,

well I think that's what I am looking at anyway. How the poop with that specimen ? I noticed if I feed my Pines chicks the poop is much worse then when one uses rodent prey. I think I read you discussing this and saying something about fish, maybe not, I thought so though.

Please elaborate ?

Thanks. Yes, he's an eastern Indigo.

I haven't tried feeding him chicks/quail (or any type of
fowl) yet. I've had him on diet of probably 80% anoles and
20% fish for the last 3 months or so. The poop situation
has improved dramatically - much less frequency and not as
stinky - as opposed to the all mouse diet he was originally on.
At one point, I actually thought of getting rid of him. It was
that bad. My personal belief is that Indigos eat a low fat diet
in the wild (ie, mostly lizards, snakes, fish, frogs). Rodents and fowl, especially domestic, are higher fat foods. Anyway, I don't know much about Pine snakes, but it might be worth an experiment if you think wild ones might have a low fat diet also. (Of course, it might not be convenient for you to get lizards. Also, they are expensive if you have to get them shipped!)

Here's a nutritional breakdown that I used to try to figure things out:

thats kinda interesting oddly enough... my corn "jake" i wander is the same way...

i feed an all rodent diet, always have... however when it come to the poop its never smelly except for jake, and man does he get smelly too. i never thought changing his diet would fix that, never really knew there was anything else to feed him.

you mentioned quail, do you think if i switched him over to eating something else like quail there is a chance he would be less stinky?

Hey Stephen,

Hard to say, you might want to experiment if you think it's appropriate, and if it's financially and practically feasible. I'm not a corn snake expert, but I've had a few, and I know they will eat lizards.. at least the ones I found down in Florida. And I believe they eat birds also. Maybe a variety of food times would help? Do you live in an area where you can catch anoles/skinks?

I'm not knocking an all-rodent diet, because obviously there are factors like cost and convenience that are at play. But personally, I like to try to give the snake a more "natural" diet. (If you do try lizards, you might want to freeze them before feeding, supposedly that will kill any parasites.)

If you do try something different, please let me know how it goes. It's always good to learn new things about our pets!

Thanks,
Ed

yeah Ed i think i might try that i allready had a sm rat for him last night (all of them ate for me last night) so he ate that but it didnt leave hardly any lump at all, very small small rat. anyways i was thinking about today maybe going to get a few goldfish or something and trying that... i dont know if he will eat them though, he is so used to getting dead rats lol, but hey its worth a try.

in the summer here there are whiptail lizards all over, they are kinda small (wouldnt make much of a meal for him) and they are hard to catch. but ill try

you give Jack feeder anoels right? where do you get those?

Thanks Aubrey. I think he's over 30" now, when I got him he was about 22". He's eating 2 or 3 anoles at a time now. I may need to move him up to bearded dragons pretty soon.
