my brand new froglet... of a bull frog or a leopard frog????

tommot Aug 28, 2003 12:36 AM

I Guess my tadpole is no more...a tadpole, but he is now an offical frog!!!!! there is one insy problem though... I'm not to sure that it is a bull frog, he seems to change color from a lite tan, to aan olive color for starters his legs are striped and have little "goosebumps" on the them, he seems to be develping way too fast (I got him 2 months ago from the pet store at wich time he had no legs at all) and he seems too small (one inch) the pet store I got it at seems to have a problem nameing the animals right (my turtle was advertized as a Asian box turtle, but it turned out to be a malasyan box turtlealso known as an east asian box turtle quite a bit different than what i wanted). sasly my DC isen't working so i cant put a picture of him up

Does it look anything like this? This was one of the leo's I raised from a tad and the picture is of it about 2 weeks out of the water.

Don't you love how pet shops mislabel their things? I once saw a european toad labelled as a leopard frog at this place near me!
Does your frog have spots all over its body, or just on the legs? It could even be a green frog. Does it have "dorsalateral" ridges down the sides of its back? If so, you may be proud parent of a little green frog. If it is more spotted, it could be a leopard frog.
In my opinion, you're lucky to have gotten something other than a bullfrog. They get huge and require a huge tank and more frequent cleaning than the smaller frogs. Congratulations on your new addition.
Here's a pic of some of my leopard froglets, shortly after metamorphosis. There's a pic of green froglets on my site, I think it's the last link you click on:

The ridges should be there, but mine didn't have light coloring on the lines.

It could be a leopard frog; the ones in my pic were really not new morphs; they had been morphed for maybe about a month before being photographed. Care for leopards and greens is really similar anyway, so you might just have to wait for the frog to get more markings if it is a leopard frog, to rule out green-frog status.
What setup do you have them in? I have found that tiny metamorphs usually do better without a substrate, to start out with. They have an easier time getting the crickets and will not get a mouthful of dirt. Moist paper towels are good for retaining humidity in such a setup, as is a shallow water bowl.

Yeah, I am guessing that you have a green frog. I know the stitch marks you were referring to.
