Just no way to get this girl to eat !

Herplover95 Mar 01, 2008 03:22 PM

Hello,
Well, the trouble continues for my Amel. Today I bought zilla's Jump-Start but the attachment they give to put in the animals mouth is too big. Even though she's 3 ft she's very uncooperative and I only managed to get less than a drop on her mouth. After she got it down she was popping and crackling and getting very stressed so I put her back. My trouble is that my parents dont think that the vets know anything. I want to make her an appointmenr for Monday because truthfuly, after 5 months of this, I'm sick of it. I have no idea what would make a 3 ft corn not eat like this, but whatever it is, she's really been affected by it. It's very frustrating and I think it's time for me to stop thinking I can handle it myself and let a more knowledgable person take care of her. Any opinions/advice?

You'll need to provide some background information, such as how long you've had the snake, where you got it from, what your setup is like, if the snake's ever eaten for you in the past, etc.

I've had the snake for 3 years. She's in a 30 gal breeder. Cool side temps are 70-72. Warm side is at 88. She has always been a great non bashful eater. I have 3 ins. of aspen for substrate and i got her from Rick Krumrine. If you look back a little bit there are more posts on the same subject that I posted.

Force feeding should only be used as a last resort. I would only do it after getting a recommendation from a vet. I certianly wouldn't use an unproven product like the one made by Zilla, as Zilla is spinoff from a garden supply company.

It is not always easy to find a good reptile vet, but that what it sounds like your snake needs.

Oh ok, thank you very much. I'm glad you got back to me before I tried to find a smaller syringe to give it to her. I'll see if she eats this week and if she doesnt I'll take her to the vet.Feeding day is Tuesday so it wont be long.

Have you tried another food source, or recently changed food suppliers? Sometimes a different smell can turn them on/off.

I have one picky corn; she eats on her own schedule and finally (this year) has started to take mice, but she (and my other corns and black rats) have never turned down 1-2 week old f/t quail chicks. The one week olds are plenty big for an adult corn...
