Spring is near

boxienuts Mar 01, 2008 03:44 PM

We are finally starting to thaw some snow today here in Iowa, saw a glipse of some grass today for the first time in months, last year my crocus were blooming already at this time and the snow was all gone, this year they are under 6 feet of snow piled up by my drive way. Went to water the hibernation tubs today (I usually water the tubs with a plant watering can the 1st of each month in winter to keep the box turtles hydrated) and I saw the first hole for this year in the mulch, sand, peat, top soil mix with a box turtle head in it. They usually do this about this time, 1st week of March or so, they poke only there heads out above ground for a couple weeks and just look around taking their sweet time to wake up, before they actually come all the way up and out. When they come all the way up they usually do some soaking in the water dish and then I give them a meal, make sure everything looks OK and then they go back outside for the summer season. Yeah!!! only a couple more weeks till spring!!!
