Drill a hole for the thermostat probe?

mountainlyon Mar 01, 2008 06:21 PM

I put the probe cord through the door gap on one of my Boaphiles, the cord is kinda beat up looking, but it's been that way for some time without getting worse. I'm probably going to upgrade to double thermo anyway, making this one a spare, or for baby rack or something.

So those of you with Boaphiles or similar hinged door cages, do you drill a hole in the side? Widen an notch in the door gap? Or...?

Anyone know if the cord on a helix can be replaced?

I use a 9$ Weller mini soldiering tool to melt holes. It's not good to smash the cord anywhere. I bet Helix could replace the probe for you if you send it to them.

I use the Weller for Sterilite tubs. Does it work OK on Boaphile Plastics?

i use a tandard drill bit and it goes through easily, i drilled my hole for the probe on the end of the cage 1/2" above bottom nothing through the door.

I don't put my probes in the cage. I put them on the heater outside the cage and calibrate the temp of the heater to get the desired temp in the cage. That way, the animal can never move the probe. The temps stay as steady as possible. The animal never ever poops on the probe. The animal never gets tape stuck to it. It's all good with the probe directly on the heater.

The only instance I think the probe should be in the cage is if using either a light or a radiant heat panel to heat. In that case the probe should be hung half way between to top of the cage and the bottom. I do this by drilling a hole just slightly larger than the probe and sticking it through the hole, which is half way up on the heated end of the cage. I tape the probe cord on the back of the cage so it can't move. That's what I do.

with under cage heat do I sandwich the probe between two cages?

rainbowsrus Mar 02, 2008 09:32 PM

Exactly!!! That's how I place all my probes on the boaphile cages, sandwiched between cages.

Also, on the helix, piece of cake to change the probe. Four screws abnd the back pops off, the probe has a connector so simply unplug the old probe and plug the new one in. I replaced some standard short probes with longer ones several years back.
