bummer!

jimfmcdonald Mar 02, 2008 04:12 PM

This was a bit of a bummer to see my smallest female with 11 infertile eggs this morning. But what can you do? I suppose I should have put the male in with her a bit sooner. He is in with her now and it looks like he is happy about it so will see how it looks next month. Thanks.

Jim

i know how you feel-with our tricolors it took me the loss of a couple of clutches to learn to put a male in with a female the same day she lays!

i was just a bit confused by this situation and just wanted some clarification for my educational purposes. With both of these are you referring to placing the male in immediately after she lays for a double clutch?

Yes

Lol-more than double! When working with these S. American xenodontines of the genus Lystrophis, throw your experience with N. American hoggies out the window! Lystrophois are capable of laying 3-5 clutches or more at monthly intervals before taking any "time off". And you've got to get that male right in there as soon as your female drops to assure fertility of the next clutch....

wow I had no idea. That is kind of awesome though!

Hmmmm.....I have a GREAT fertility rate with my clutches, and I always put the male in 4-5 days after she lays, and leave him in until she goes into blue again. I almost never have slugs. Did I mention one of my girls lays an average clutch of 15.

Oh, I'm quite certain there's a "window" to hit. What I do is put the male in the day she lays-they almost always hook up right away. Then to be sure I put them together again 3 or 4 days later-about half the time I see them do it again. That has always sufficed for good fertility.
