Do iguana's spit?

crimsonghost Mar 02, 2008 04:14 PM

I am still trying to train this Ig, I took a few pictures today so that you can see what size it is. I had to chase him around his cage until I caight him, he was a real spaz so I let him tire himself out in the bath and then put the leash on him. After that we hung out for about 20 minutes.

I suppose he is somewhere around 7 months old - he opened his mouth alot but didn't bite he. I looked in his mouth and sisn't see any teeth -- does he have teeth yet?

We cleaned his cage and it looks like he spits on the glass....do these guys spit? it looks white and was clearly liquid at some point since it dried in a drip on the glass. There is already at least 4 marks in his cage - but we havn't seen him do it?

These pictures are from today:

It's not spit. It's snot, or what some of us affectionately call snalt. Iguanas sneeze to rid their bodies of excess salts. The white that you are seeing drying on the glass is salt. This is also an indication that your iguana is getting warm enough. Watch to make sure that you don't see him gaping his mouth open which means he is too hot.

LOL - Snalt ! funny, thank you for explaining....My little guy must not have any salt left in his little body !

Can you see his size by the pictures? Are we in any real danger of being injured by biting? In order to catch him its a real chase around his cage and then its a big tonsil display -- I can;t see any teeth....does he have any yet?

hi yes welcome to the wonderful world of iggy snot sometimes you need a scrub pad to get it off the cage to lol. and yes they have teeth at that age and size they are clear you can take a flashlight when he/she has open mouth shine it around the edge or look at the mouth at a angle they are hard to see but can feel them no problem they are very sharp i call them little shark teeth because they eat the same buy shredding and swolling there food. your size ig bite would probabley just cut and draw blood. but the larger igs like mine can take a good chunk or part of a finger if wanting to. hope it helps. iggirl1

Hello - yup, that helps. This Ig still freaks when I go near the cage. I am picking him up a few times during the week and several times a day on the weekends. Once I get him I think he is too scared to fight any longer. How long until he calms down and starts to accept me holding him?

I was surprised tht he didn't mind the leash I put on him - and it really helped me as well. (a real pita ass to get it on him tho)

hi you are right he/she is scared to death it is thinking he is going to be eaten so try not to chase him/her to much i am not sure of the type of cage you have but i use to sit with my igs door open and just talk to her. then i started putting my hand in farther into the cage but not touching but just talking to her then slowly she started coming to me. IGS HAVE TO TRUST YOU. that you are not going to eat them it my take 6 months or more so be patience igs are not easy. oh and be careful with the leash they break there spikes. iggirl1

Yeah Igs take a while too. I had a rescued ig who was about 32 inches or so when I first got him. He lived in my bathroom and for about a month he'd always puff up and arch his tail back when I came into my bathroom (a little uneasy sitting on the toilet with a pissed off iguana on the shelf above). It wasn't until Boris fell off from a perch and I came running into the bathroom to pick him up off the floor that he began to trust me. Strange - he wasn't hurt or anything, I wonder if he sensed that I was worried for him because after that day on Boris was my best bud until I had to adopt him out to leave for college (sad day ).
