How many herps do you have?

chelonian71 Mar 02, 2008 04:15 PM

Yes, some of you list all your herps in your signature, but not all.

I only have three (one three-toed, one RES, and one midland painted turtle).

Someone I know has one rosy boa and 11 tortoises in his home, plus about 35 turtles in a back yar pond. I thought that was a lot but....

A supervisor at John Ball Zoo has 50 or maybe a few more snakes in his home.

How many total do you guys each have? I'm betting Ken has among the highest... my understanding is that Ken has all box turtle subspecies (and reproduction from each subspecies almost every year) that occur in the U.S., plus at least a couple more (western pond turtle and a number of wood turtles).

I'm curious... .don't think you shouldn't post just because you can't beat Ken or the guy at the zoo.

I don't post that much because I haven't the experience to answer too many questions, but...
I have 1 Three toed, 1 cherry Head Tortoise, 1 Eastern Painted, 1 Southern Painted, and there is an old Eastern Boxie in my Mom's yard that is over 50 years old...been there since I was a baby.
I used to have an Ornate, but had to give her away as my yard wasn't finished being renovated, and she was used to hibernating and got sick from being inside.

kensopher Mar 03, 2008 11:51 AM

Great pictures! That cherry head is immaculate.

strange_wings Mar 03, 2008 12:38 AM

3 leopard geckos
5 golden geckos (would have more, but my female is terrible at picking where to glue her eggs)
10 ornate box turtles

kensopher Mar 03, 2008 11:46 AM

I don't like to state the numbers I have, and I have recently tried to only list the various types I have when it is applicable. I don't want it to seem like a competition. It isn't like that for me. I got caught up in that at one point, but thought better of it.

I know you said it innocently, but I certainly wouldn't want to support the idea that having more turtles is winning or beating anyone else.

I keep and breed the types of turtles that I am most passionate about...the 6 NA Box turtles, NA Woods, Blanding's, Western Ponds, and European ponds. I personally believe that these turtles are in dire need of as much captive propagation as possible, and this is now my main reason for keeping and breeding them. The fact that I adore them each individually is a wonderful bonus.

boxienuts Mar 03, 2008 12:49 PM

Yes, it is definately not a competition. I only post what I have so that others can email me with discussion of other things that we keep common and so that I don't have to state what types I currently keep versus what I have kept in the past. I do it more to show were my current interests are, and I think it is neat to see where others interests are as a hobbiest. I'm sure a person or professional breeder would get to big and have too many to be worth taking the time to list. For me it's not bragging rights, but rather a form of sharing and saying,"hey, this are the herps that I am currently interested in and keeping, what do we have in common?"

didn't mean at all to make it like a competition.... just in fun! heck, if it was a competition, I'm near the bottom of the list.

Understood, it is fun, I think it's neat to see what other stuff people keep besides what board they are posting on. Then I know I'm not the only "crazy" out there with a basement full of reptiles, amphibians, and fish tanks.

I just did a head count and it seems that over the many years, my menagerie has grown to 31 herps (some of them have been here for over 15 years). From Rosy Boas to Ball Pythons, East African Sand Boas to a myopic Leopard Gecko, it seems there is no common theme to my herpetoculture endeavours... My group is quite paltry compared to many; however, provided all animals are well taken care of, it need not be about numbers.

boxienuts Mar 03, 2008 12:56 PM

Nice picts, love the rosy's, good looking BT, is that one BT over two or more yrs, looked like the same male maturing over time to me? looks like an eastern, possibly gulf coast?

Thanks!
Those Eastern Box Turtle photos actually depict three individuals (all at approximately one year of age). Two are incubated males and one is an incubated female. We'll see...

boxienuts Mar 03, 2008 04:43 PM

The one definately looks male, redish eyes already, the last photo I believe, that's why I wondered if it was a sequence because the all look kinda female and then the males develope. He kinda looked like blueish white around his jaw, which is why I wondered if might be gulf coast, but probably just the photo, or could be I'm just half blind. Great photos, they all look healthy, no pyramiding. I have raised my 3-toes from hatchlings and the don't have pyramiding, but my easterns I bought as 2yr olds from a guy that feed them dog food so they have some pyramiding, but at least they were CBB and not wild caught and hopefully with an improved diet and conditions they will have a long healthy life in my care and make lots of babies. That will make a nice trio for you, good luck with them.

If there are lots of pics and someone has dial up it would take forever to load, so people put a dial up warning in the subject line to be polite

Only three. A three toed, a crested gecko, and a tiger salamander. I used to have another three toed, but she didn't make it out of hibernation last year... Over the summer, though, I got to watch my friend's bearded dragon, which was a blast.

boxienuts Mar 04, 2008 09:36 AM

Hey Chicagoboxturtle I assume you live in Chicago then? That is a nice looking 3-toe, is it female? do you hibernate BTs outside?
Just wondering, I only live only 3hrs drive west.

Chicagoboxturtle Mar 04, 2008 04:04 PM

Yeah, I live in the northwest suburbs. For six years I hibernated my turtles outside. Just gave them a bunch of leaf litter and extra mulch for them to burrow down into. But then last year it got really warm for a few days, then went back to below freezing. I think my girl got tricked into thinking it was spring, so she came up, then froze when it got cold again. So this winter I decided to try the hibernation chamber idea. I'm keeping my turtle in a styrofaom cooler with some mulch and leaves in it, and I'm keeping it at around 40-50 degrees. I take him out and weigh him every week. I probably don't need to check on him so much, but after his girlfriend died, I'm a little paranoid.

boxienuts Mar 05, 2008 10:11 AM

The hibernation chamber sounds good, sorry for your loss last year. Yeah, the first year I did the hibernation I was real worried because it is so long. But after a couple times you won't worry a bit, one year I got so busy with other things I actually kind of forgot about them Then one day my wife said, "hey it's warming up are the BTs up yet"? and I was like holy crap I havent even checked Usually when I water them they wiggle a bit and I see the dirt on the surface move a bit, so I know they are still alive, but I really don't mess with them, I just let them sleep. Just make sure you have drainage holes drilled in the bottom so there isn't any standing water, they need moisture, and when you water they can hydrate and soak it up, but it's not good to have standing water at the bottom, things rot in stagnant standing water including turtles. Maybe you already know this but I just thought I would through it out in case you hadn't considered that part when setting up you hibernation chamber. Do you ever go the the Chicago reptile shows?
Take care

These photos made my night. Nice to see someone put effort into taking some great photos.

By the way - what type of rosy boa is the one with really dark red on a cream background? If you know which one I'm referring to.

Jaime77 Mar 05, 2008 10:44 AM

Here's my list:

1.5.4 eastern box turtles
2.3 ball pythons
1.1 corn snakes
0.1 bearded dragon

Several of my ladies are gravid, so I'll have to update this list soon.

boxienuts Mar 05, 2008 07:32 PM

I'm sure this will be off topic for this forum assuming it's snakes that are the gravid ladies, but I'm curious, what do you have gravid right now?

I have 1 female 3toed, 2 male 3toed, 1 female florida and 3 hatchlings. Ken has suggested that they might be a cross of the florida and the 3toed. (gosh Ken, your a regular celebrity.) I also have various chameleons and geckos that spend their time pooping around my house. Well, to be fair, they also catch cockroaches. I would like to know what the designation 1.2.1 or whatever means?
Is it female, male, kids?
I also have 1 v.cross-eyed cat, 1 fox terrier, 1 v. old Norwich, and 3 hens sitting on golf balls.

These numbers represent the sexes of the animals, i.e. male.female.unknown. For example, 1.2.1 E. Box Turtles indicates one male, two females, and one unknown sex.

patsy1 Mar 07, 2008 03:53 PM

Thanks. I assumed it meant babies.
