hypo is a partial penetrance gene

micahdenton Mar 03, 2008 11:37 AM

ok hypos are a partial penetrance dominant gene. what this means if the boa has the gene it can always be seen. most of the time boas show roughly 50% expression, some times more or less. a homozygous hypo always shows a 100% expression. but because it is a partial penetrance dominant gene you can have 90% expression from a hypo to a normal breeding but you can also have a 10% expression in the same litter. we have all seen those maybe it is maybe it isn't boas. the more hypo to hypo breedings you do the more the gene builds up. so if you breed say a f4 hypo to a normal most of the babies will be 70% expressions where if you breed a f1 you will get mostly 50% expressions but 20% expressions show up. so picture it like this.

homozygous gene expression |xxxx|
heterozygous gene 75% |xxx_|
heterozygous gene 50% |xx__| most common
heterozygous gene 25% |x___| rare but is happens

hope this helps .
anybody notice that homozygous animals have a more domed feel to their scales?

In my opinion, the salmon mutant gene (AKA hypo) is a dominant mutant gene that has variable expressivity. If it showed incomplete penetrance, some of the animals that possessed the mutant gene would look normal.
