Calico or Sugar ?

medusah Mar 03, 2008 02:34 PM

What is the difference between a calico and a sugar?

I don't have a calico, unfortunately, but all the research I have done always says, Calico, aka Sugar. I think it is a different name for the same snake or a version of it.

Yep, different peoples names for the exact same animal.

I would not say they are the same. They might be or might not. I am working with the Rene Valentin line from France. Pete Kahl and TSK are also. This line is consistently Black Backed and has an orange border around its pattern. It has a reduced pattern and the siblings to the Sugars are quite often Black Back also at least from TSK's Sugar. Black Back siblings? Genetic Black Back? If this line is the same as the Calico lines it could be a lineage that is slightly different or a different line altogether? Only more breeding will determine if the Calico and the Valentin Sugar line are the same or not. Enclosed is a photo of my Sugar which I purchased from TSK.

They could be the same? They could be compatible? They could be not the same lines? They could be compatible and not be the same lines?

Pastels have different lines. They are compatible, etc.

Sincerely, Kyle

That is an exceptional animal. There are calicos that look like that as well though.

Sorry I forgot I also wanted to mention, if there are black backs and black back sugars that would suggest to me that the black back is another separate gene that was introduced and that the animals that are black back sugars are double visual animals.

RoyalVariations Mar 04, 2008 02:53 PM

that could be and is worth breeding to establish if it is.

That is true but as I said about Pastels as an example they are not all the same line. When I decided to purchase either the Calico or the Sugar I spoke with 5 or 6 breeders working with Calicos or Sugars. Two had the Sugar line from France. I requested photos and I noticed what seemed to me to be a more consistent look that I was after. The Sugar line had that look. I am NOT saying one is better than another but I am saying I like this line. Some like specific lines of many of the known Morphs. It is a personal preference. I know of only one breeder working with the Sugar line and the Calico line. More could be working with both but not to my knowledge. TSK is working with both lines and they have noticed differences in the two lines. How different? Perhaps it would be better to ask them. Regardless I have seen photos of awesome Calicos which I like very much. They are both beautiful. VPI for example has beautiful Calicos. They both have a look that none of the other Morphs have and I think they are both underrated.
