they need to get qualified people in there. softshell turtles shouldnt be piled in with hard shells no matter what. I have seen softshells get eaten alive by other turtles. ball python getting sealed in a tub with baby boas. gah, I wanted to slap them.

Agreed. My jaw dropped when they dropped that ball python in with the boas... I mean, if the place was having all its animals seized, I doubt the person who owned them was really doing much to quarantine or keep them seperate...But still.
Did you hear the bit at the end with the "skanks"? Those were some blue tongued SKINKS in there, not scantily clad women.

yea, its one of the reasons I am pursuing a career in that field. I am getting ready to start school in july to become a vet tech for starters but all my credit hours will go torwards becoming a vet. after that I will be working on my own animal rescue center. I will focus more on exotics and I will also do school presentations and do my best to inform people properly.

Being a rescue center doesn't involve you in cases like this one though, where the animals are seized. They have to be held at whatever humane society while all the police stuff is dealt with, I think.
Rescue is hard and can be tough on you.
Do you work at a rescue place now? Or volunteer? I worked for a shelter for half a year and you really learn a lot. My shelter only did cats, rabbits, and dogs, but it was the process that everything went through that was worth learning about.
Good luck!!

Ive actually started rescueing some reptiles already. my two biggest boas were both sick as can be when I got em. I paid 100 for the biggest one and the other I got free. both had shedding issues/scars/mites and to top that off RI and severely underweight. they are both getting better my pocket is empty but its ok.
My vet is also trying to get me to be a tech for him right now. He works with nothing but exotics. I think it will be fun but the pay isnt there at all.
I know how rescued animals can sometimes be pretty messed up. I once saw a boa with so much retained shedding that it basically lost its eyes and the whole top of its head was deformed. Instead of letting it suffer anymore (it had mouth rot and a pretty bad RI) we had it put down. I saw that one when I was working at a reptile store.

The problem isn't usually fixing the stuff up - common stuff you learn how to fix fairly quickly, uncommon stuff, well, that's what vets are for.
The problem is actually that you get very burned out dealing with people who don't want their pet anymore, and are leaving the cleanup for someone else to deal with. Google "rescue burnout" and check out some of the sites that come up. This one is for small animals, but it's a good article:
http://www.cavyrescue.co.uk/running-a-rescue.shtml
I tried for a little while, but I get too frustrated dealing with people to be the one to take them in. Your line of rescue, with exotics, is not likely to get quite as frantic as a more common animal rescue, but you'll end up seeing more horrific cases because people wait longer and know less about their animals.
Just be prepared.
Start networking now, and DON'T start taking in rescues before you finish school! They will suck up your free time, and make you less capable of finishing the plans you have started. It sounds kind of cold to say "ignore pets in need now" but you'll help many more if you finish school and accomplish what you're saying.
Good luck!!

Just wanted to let you know that all of these reptiles have been placed in good hands. Some went to the Houston Zoo, some to the ETHS and some to local shelters like ours. They are all in need of some medical care. Thanks!

Flash 'N DragonZ

What struck me was how they dropped the reptiles in those crude dungeon-like containers. No telling what temps they were keeping them at. They probably thought they were going out of their way to get it right by the looking at all those newly fashioned tubs.
What a waste of money.
As far as the turtles go, they looked to be outdoor specimens just piled into aquariums for transport. No telling what they had in mind for them.

Anyone else notice the increase in stories about exotic pets since they have been pushing for this new ban?

It's not a ban - yet. It's an inquiry that is in the same section because it deals with those things.
I'm betting after the inquiry deadline is up, we'll see an actual proposed ban or some form of proposed regulation come up.
But I've noticed an increase in exotic horror stories, too. >

It seems like the worst contagion pandemic in this country now is Ignorance. The media is all about spreading ignorance.
Until we once and for all separate that campaign financing teat from the media, the demagogues will rule and ignorant thinking will prevail.

I agree, it must be more than coincidence that the number of sensational articles on snakes has increased. And being the only person at work who owns snakes, I get the "oh, did you hear about this one?" The latest was the USA Today article about the invasion of the Burmese Pythons (They think I'm wierd for owning snakes anyway). I tried to explain that the article was exaggerated, that the researchers did not take into consideration the survivability of burmese pythons in low temperatures and other environmental factors, or the winter temperatures of the areas that the pythons were going to allegedly invade. I was trying to educate, but they didn't believe a word I said. I guess I'm just the crazy snake woman
After all, they think that if our snakes get out, they will strangle my husband and I in our sleep. It's so frustrating, you try to educate people, and yet they stick to their preconceived opinions.
