Boa temps question for the experts

Beyonder Mar 04, 2008 08:08 AM

Hi,

Recently aquired 2x one-year old BCIs.
I have kept them in a somewhat small plastic container up until now controlled with a thermostat.

I have built a 130cm x 60cm x 60cm wood enclosure for them.
I have put ceramic flower plates (English is not my native tongue. I have no idea what the correct word is) and drilled a hole in it for them to hide in. I use newspaper as substrate.
I have a heatmat controlled with thermostat on the bottom of the cage. I set it at 34 degrees Centigrade /- 1 degree. I have a very big water bowl in the middle of the cage to raise the humidity somewhat (it is at around 57-59% gauged with digital hygrometer). On the cold side I have fake plants and another of those ceramic plate/dish thingys along with a couple of wooden logs etc.

The temps are gauged with a IR laser temp gun (is that what it is called?). After running for a few days the temps are 32-35 degrees in the area around and above the heatmat. The temp on the the newspaper on the cold side is from 25,5 degrees Centigrade up to 26-27 nearing the middle of the enclosure.

So my question is.. is this adequate enough for the two small ones? Will I stress them with this somewhat big cage? Are the temps correct? Humidity?

I would appreciate feedback from some experienced boa keepers.

Thanks.

About 51" by 23.5" by 23.5" inches.

>>I set it at 34 degrees Centigrade /- 1 degree.

93.2 degrees farenheit.

Yep! Temp gun. And we just call those flower 'plates' flower pot bases, or something similar. Plates works, though!

After running for a few days the temps are 32-35 degrees in the area around and above the heatmat.

89.6 - 95 degrees farenheit

The temp on the the newspaper on the cold side is from 25,5 degrees Centigrade up to 26-27 nearing the middle of the enclosure.

77.9 - 80.6 degrees farenheit

I did all the conversions because I need to practice for my chem class anyway.

As far as housing the boas, I'm really not sure, as I only have one. During the day, her cage runs about 33.8 degrees Celsius on the hot side, down to about 30.5 on the hot side at night. The rest of the cage varies from 26.6 degrees celsius (daytime) to 22.7 C (cold night). I don't know the humidity, but she's shedding in one piece so it must be fine. Mine is eating, shedding, pooping, and thermoregulating, so I guess what I have works. She's not a baby though, so what works for me may not work for you.

Hopefully with the conversions some of the folks here who really know what they're talking about will answer you.

The only thing I can think of, because you have such a large cage, may be the babies feeling secure/insecure. If you do end up having any problems, try adding extra hides or bushes so that the snakes can get away from each other or just not see each other as easily.

Your english is actually better than some native speakers I know! Quite an accomplishment. I know I can't speak any other languages fluently!
