Scared Male

ADWE Mar 04, 2008 09:41 AM

My female snow(05) shed through the night on sunday, so on monday night i added the male(06) and he just bolted to get away as soon as he saw her? now she is just over 4 feet and he is around 30", so she is quite a bit bigger. You think i'll have to just wait another year to get him to breed because the size difference is just too large? OR should i just leave her in his enclosure? i also have the option of borrowing a friends anery male that is a proven breeder! let me know what you guys think! thanks!

i had the same problem with my bloodred male last year and had too wait another year but he mated first try this year with the blizzard female....so I'd say wait...or try alittle later maybe they aren't ready to breed yet...did you feel any eggs in your female?

I didn't know i would be able to feel eggs before they were fertilized? she does look the slightest bit heavier in the rear half, but i havn't really attepted to feel for eggs!

you gently push in with your finger tips on her belly and if she ovulating you'll feel small bumps like pearls and as the y eggs develop you can count them. With practice i'm able to count the eggs before she lays them...it's not hard but you must be very gentle with her..Good luck...

I'd leave him in there for three days, then take him out for three. I'd keep him on this cycle (in for three, out for three) until the female appears gravid. There are many reasons why the male may be scared and first-time breeder males sometimes need time to get the hang of things. Small males (18-20 inches) can be fully capable of breeding much larger females, so I see no reason why the pairing you have can't be successful.

I am having a similar problem with two males that I am using. I have 3 18 month old male snakes. One is a butter and the other is a carmel motley. They are the only snakes that I have of those types and was hoping they'd breed snakes of the same phase, older females. Seems they are not interested yet either. But, as mentioned, I will keep trying for a while until I know my females are not getting bigger/gravid.
Good luck to you.

Well i know for a fact she is ready cause she just won't stop roaming around! But not very much action on his end. i've had them seperated for a day, so tonight i'll throw them back in together and leave them for a few days. He hasn't shed since he's been in hibernation, so possibly he's waiting for that?? Anyone have a rought idea of how long the females are receptive?

Thanks, Andy

Nice pix!

How would you describe that snow in your post: High pink? Bubblegum? Or are these both the same thing?

Here is mine:

This is the female snow that will be hopefully breeding after the addition of the male last evening!
