holdback 07 hypo.. harlequin??..

patoquack Mar 05, 2008 12:08 AM

this first pic was taken shortly after first shed..

then just a few days ago, in the sun.

he's pretty much turned orange..

his mother is an 03 salmon, produced by Branden Weik, bred with two males - one of them being an 04 hypo harlequin I purchased from Tim Magee. I'm feeling this guy may be a harlequin... any thoughts? the other possible father was/is a nice slightly aberrant normal.

thanks for looking,
Patrick

hey patrick, great job with that one.
I don't have experience with harlequins, but it does look like the harlequin sired him.

I would say it is based on the striping on the tail, but I'm no
pro. I've got a pair, all of the Harlequins I've seen have had
that tail striping. Not all of them do though...

I vote harlequin because it looks like a poss super hypo to me based on the reduction and round shape of the saddles. (and the only way it could be a super is if the hypo harli was the father) Also the color on the sides of the tail looks more like what I have seen in my hypo harli babies than in the few salmon babies I have seen. Just my $0.02.
Very nice and I would have kept that one as well!

I wish there were more definite ways to prove the harlequin trait.. most of what I have read about the harlequin trait seem to be vague descriptions at best... at times highly colored, aberrant patters... possible genetics for producing "patternless" boas.. maybe?? with only one litter of patternless it's hard to say with any certainty yet about that one. nothing that clearly seems to say "yes" or "no"... other than proving that the lineage came from the Magee's line.

thanks for the input!

Yes, the harli line has lots going on in it. Don't know if it's one genetic change or a host of differnt things going on. In my harlixZahara litter, I had boas with lots of abbarant pattern, tail stripes, great color, others with only the great color, others with normal color but the pattern changes. Very weird! I think it's exciting and I've got plans down the road to see what I can figure out with it, even if I am only a small-timer! I can't wait to produce my own F2s and sunglow harlis!

Is it just me or is something about those eyes wrong? They are huge. I have seen this with some of the higher end morphs in corns before but boas????

I can see that too in the pics now that you point it out, but in person the eyes look correct..? I'll go look again to be sure......

thanks for pointing out your observation.
