New Ball Python is finally home!

tmontz06 Mar 05, 2008 10:24 AM

I got too excited and went and got my snake last night. Dunno if you've read the other thread I had going, but I named Oliver, cause he's kind of an olive color. Very super sweet snake. Tried putting him in his tank last night after I had it all set up and he kept wanting to get back out! Today he's burrowed himself under his water dish, figured he's scared or something, so I'm gonna just leave him alone.

I snapped a few pix of him last night, he was very active after I got him all settled in. It was neat to watch him! Hope you enjoy!!!

Oh he's a looker! I LOVE his markings!! Congrats

Good looking ball. He needs a week or so to settle in, even if he acts like he wants out. The burrowing under the water bowl is normal. He is using it as a hide. Do you have a hide for him? I have two that have hides but insist on getting under the water bowls.

Yes I do have a hide for him as well as plants to get behind if he desires. Right now he's in the normal hide on top of the heat pad (under tank). I'm gonna leave him be for awhile and let him settle in, as you said. Also, do I need to turn off the lamp at night? I did last night, but i don't know if it got too cold in there so, hopefully he's gonna be okay. :D

Thanks so much!

He will get his heat source from the UTH. The lamp will only heat the ambient air, not the surface where he spends his time. One problem you will encounter with the lamp will be keeping the humidity right, 50-60%. The lamp will dry out the air. If you want the lamp for looks get a moonglow light, they put off very little heat but allows you to watch your snake explore at night. Make sure the temps on the warm side (over the UTH) is 88-90 on the surface, the cool side should be 78-80. Use digital thermomitors, not dial guages.

I have a red bulb, do you think that would work?

FatBoyBallPython Mar 06, 2008 06:18 AM

The red bulbs also put off heat and will dry the air. I think the moonglow bulbs are blue or purple, I don't use them so I am not sure. I do know the red ones are heat lights.
