Female breeding age/size?

JasonW Mar 05, 2008 06:21 PM

Hi everyone. My female is about 3 years old but only about 2 feet long. I am starting to wander if she is just a runt or something. I mean she should be of age but at only 2 feet long is she big enough to breed yet? I purchased her as a "Striped Albino Chocolate King" if that makes a difference.

Are you SURE you are giving it optimum husbandry conditions??(temps, proper sized prey items, how large, how often, etc...) is the prey approx. as big around in diameter as the snake at mid-body?

Yes and sometimes the prey is a little larger than the largest part of the snakes body. I keep her fed just like all my other snakes, they are grow fine she just kinda stays small

Hmmm,...All things being equal, if it's been fed well all this time, it's very possible you just have a "runt". In it's third year, I would expect it to be at least three to three and a half feet or even much better, but two feet is definitely small.

Oh well, not all animals end up being the size of Godzilla!

best regards, ~Doug

Well on that note I was wrong also, after checking records I found she is an 06 female so she is only 2 years old, I purchased her on 7/06. It is posable that she is a late 05 but not probable. So with this new info dose she seem right for 2 years?

What are the average lengths Kingsnakes get to? Any Species known to be bigger than others? thanks.

Eastern Kingsnakes get the biggest, 4 to 5 feet, if I remember correctly. Most others top out around 3 to 4 feet.

Runts happen.

In my clutch of 11 from last year - one of them was same size as others out of the egg but just is not growing very fast at all.

Here she is next to a clutch mate - they are in same shelf of same rack:

Your king may be breedable.

I don't intent to ever breed my runt, I'm planning on giving her away once she is a little bigger (I want to make sure she doesn't have something wrong that will result in early death). But it happens.

Have a fecal float done, some parasites can result in stunted growth.
