saagbay Mar 05, 2008 07:03 PM

okay so after talking to a guy at work, who makes claim to being a herper... i told him i was waning to feed my corn something other than rats, he suggested trying eggs!!!! lol huh just run to the quicky mart and grab a dozen eggs, warm em up and toss em in....

so after thinking about it thats doesnt sound like a bad idea to me at all corns eat eggs in the wild.

sorry for being so OT but i though it was interesting enough to post. any thoughs anyone?

I guess you need to figure out if he likes them scrambled or sunny side up...

Seriously, I have no clue. Not sure if Jake would even eat them, but personally, I'd be hesitant to feed him chicken eggs. Again, I have no evidence it would be harmful. But there's always a risk to trying new foods - could be some harmful bacteria, parasite and/or chemical present.

Has this guy at your work ever fed a snake eggs?

Thanks,
Ed

he has bull snakes and hognose. he told me when his bull warms up after winter he will toss in a few eggs and just leave them till the snake decides its hungry...

but i dont know, i have to say i like the idea though lol cheap and easy perfect.

so when it comes down to it i dont know if i even will try anything, a couple guys in the corn forum say stick with rats... corns wont eat fish, and chicks and lizards will most likely make it worse...

so i dont know maybe not, it was a good thought though

... you at least have an open mind. Have the corn snake guys actually tried chicks and/or lizards, or are they speculating?

To be honest, it really doesn't sound too bad as is, though, if it's just the smell. Maybe you just need to put a clothes pin on your nose when you clean out Jake's tank.

Thanks,
Ed

yeah one guy said he can say from experience chicks make it worse as far as being runny and smelly...

and ya know what it really isnt all that bad, i mean ive lived with it for close to 10 years now so its not that big a deal... dont get me wrong its not like the smell would make a maggot gag lol... but its bad enough to where it get me to clean that age right away lol and i tend to procrastinate allot so its prolly a good thing

so not the end of the world but i did like the idea!! and im still curious to see if he would eat an egg or not. i might try just for fun.... kinda like seeing if your dog will drink beer lol right just curious

I've never tried feeding eggs to snakes myself but my concern would be that most non-organic eggs are from chickens fed grains that have been treated with pesticides. I have no idea if it would be a problem but I would hate for that to be detrimental to the snakes health. I would think that your best bet would be to try feeding organic eggs only. More expensive but better to be safe than sorry in my opinion.

thats a good point, i was wondering about that myself and couldnt think of a reason why it could be harmful.. but that sounds like a potential reason to me.

either way you look at it a dozen eggs is still alot cheaper than a med rat!!

when it come down to it Jake will most likely refuse anything but rats anyways, so im not too hopeful. but thanks for the advice!!
