Uromastyx princeps not eating veggies

africansnakes Mar 05, 2008 07:19 PM

Hi there

I have a beautifull male U. princeps since several months now.
He loves eating Locusts and he will eat 1 - 2 every second day.

I have tried to offer him everything from Ice Berg Salad to Carrots to Spinach, to Basil, to Cucumber, Carrots, birdseeds, Sunflower seeds, Fruits, Strawberries, Banana, Soja Sprout.. i Mean I tried everything and he will not eat it. He will only eat his Locust.

The only thing he ate today for a first time were 2 white Flowers which I put in his terraria.

He is well nourished and shows no sign at all of malnourishment.

I have read that princeps contrary to most other Uromastyx feeds on insects to at least 50% of its diet. But mine is virtually only eating Insects.

Has anyone got any advise on what I could try ?

Or does anyone have any more info on their feeding habits ?

Thanks allot.

If the little booger won't take endive, romaine, turnips, mustards, or dandelions, shoot him & be done with it.

The thing about giving them insects is that it is like giving a child a doughnut. They are higher in fat and low in nutrients. So, obviously, if given the option of eating doughnuts every day or eating your veges, the choice is clear. Try dandelion flowers, hibiscus flowers and peas. These are equally tasty treats and much healthier. You may be correct about your type of Uro eating a higher percentage of insects than your average Uro, but it is important to get greens into his diet. One last thing, keep spinach out of the mix, and it has nutrients that can bind the calcium in your uro's bones. Good luck and let us know if he starts eating tasty greens.
