Allergic reaction!

Igottabigboid Mar 05, 2008 11:03 PM

So I got my breeders today and when I picked them up to put them in their bins my hands started to itch and hive looking spots developed. When I got home from work I picked one up and the same thing happened. Has anyone else had this happen or heard of such a thing happening?

My son and my hubby get welts from the scratches from rats or if the rats pee on them they get itchy and red..My dh is super allergic to mice and his face will swell and he gets hives and sneezing/running nose.

The weird thing is I never used to be allergic. I've bred rats in the past, handled many mice/rats in the past and only now has my body showed any signs of a reaction. I hope that somehow this is temperary since I've not had problems in the past.

What bedding where they on and what are they on. I have reacted to some rats but not mine. I also react to snakes kept on cypress mulch. I think sometimes aspen sets it off but not pine. Go Fig.

I bought them from two places a local pet shop and petco. When I put them in my rat rack I had a mix of old aspen and new pine shavings. I have since cleaned the bins and there is only new pine now. I will test to see if I react the same in one or two days. The aspen might have been a few years old, long story, but didn't really smell funny so I used it. I really don't think that was the problem but it's gone now. It really seems like there is something on their feet and when I hold them they make small scratches that swell up and itch.
