Collareds eyes stuck together!

driller42 Mar 06, 2008 11:18 AM

Hi there,

I have some yearling collaris auriceps that have just emerged from hibernation. All are fine and healthy BUT all have their eyes stuck together so cant see! I have washed their eyes with warm diluted saline solution and this has softened the dry "snot" and allowed their eyes to open.
But I have noticed that all have gunked up eyes again and so im having to wash their eyes on an almost a daily basis.
Aside from this the lizards are active and alert, just cant open their eyes as they are stuck together!
Any ideas? I have seen this in tortoises when they emerge from hibernation, but have found that after their eyes are bathed they then stay open no problem, but this doesnt seem to be working in the collareds.
Please reply to my email address (as well as this forum) robpilley2006@yahoo.co.uk as I dont often get a chance to check this forum,

Thanks for your time

Rob

Hi Rob I will also email incase you do not see this, but most often when the eyes are stuck shut like this (and especially coming out of brumation) it is a respiratory infection going on.

Check also for any poping sounds you may hear when breathing or any signs of keeping head more pointed towards the ceiling/ open mouth gaping. All these things do not have to be present, the eyes are as I say usually a dead give away to some sort of resp/bacterial infection. The only thing to correct it is usually antibiotics!

Let us know how you and your collareds make out. sure hope everythign will be fine.
