Scary. Anyone here live in Missouri??

natsamjosh Mar 06, 2008 02:14 PM

This is frightening:

http://www.house.mo.gov/billtracking/bills081/biltxt/intro/HB1847I.htm

Reptiles (although unclear which ones), parakeets, doves, etc., are all covered under "wild animals" and would be banned/regulated. (Somehow ferrets made the cut, however????????)

Thanks,
Ed

Time to get proactive before they put a blanket law into effect.

Ferrets are domestic animals descended from the European polecat. They've been companion and working animals for as long or longer than cats and dogs have.

Oh, I'm not knocking ferrets, I just pointed them out to show how
arbitrary and capricious the bill is, as well as how poorly written the bill is.

There is a website with a petition against the bill:

We should all ask them to tell us the temperature requirements of a Nile monitor, one of the species on the prohibited list. Then again, I guess with global warming imminent, we could see Kansas City subject to the equator-like temperatures the Nile monitor needs to survive.

For anyone interested, the reptiles specified to be regulated/banned are as follows, but the wording describing
what animals *are* allowed doesn't include any reptiles except turtles that have not been deemed dangerous.

-----
"Reptilia, including all reptiles that are venomous by nature as determined by department rule, including but not limited to Burmese python, reticulated python, African rock python, green anaconda, yellow anaconda, Indian python, Asiatic monitor, Nile monitor, white throat monitor, black throat monitor, and crocodile monitor, and any hybrids thereof"
-------

Thanks for posting the e-mail addresses, I'll be sending some e-mails tonight.

Thanks,
Ed

I don't live in Missouri but I sent them an email. I asked them why they want to ban hundreds of exotic species of animals that couldn't survive in the wild there but they don't have a problem with none native fish that could. They would never take my word for it so I suggested that they visit a zoo and ask the experts how many animals on their list could live thru a Missouri winter.

They are probably worried that a Burmese python is going to explode out of a snow drift and eat their precious cat or dog. I don't have any idea why they would want to ban parrots, parakeets and canarys.

If their "logic" is to ban animals potentially destructive to the area, they ought to put cats at the top of the list. That's what makes no sense about these stupid bans, they're so random in their species inclusion.

If you're fighting this, talk to your local pit bull and anti-breed ban groups. They've been through this crap over and over again, they'll know exactly how to go about things.

And tell 'em to ban cats. Horrible, breath stealing, destructive, feral going beasts.

Honestly, I don't think this ban has the slightest chance of passing, it's just way to broad. I just don't have any respect for people who are as ignorant as these 3 woman are.

I agree with you about cats. I dont mind if people keep them for pets, but when they let them run loose and they come over to my house and walk across the top of my truck or car or chase away or kill the native animals then it suddenly becomes time for target practice! If you love your cat, keep it inside. They do a lot of damage to the native wildlife and a lot of people hate them.
