Weight?

football9755 Mar 06, 2008 05:04 PM

I was just wondering what a good weight for a baby leo. He is about a month or two months old. When I got him he looked really skinny and he wouldnt eat. Now he is eating two gut loaded mealworms. Pictures of him when i got him below.

The picture you posted is severely underweight, has the tail grown out at all since then? Two mealworms doesn't seem like enough. I normally feed crickets, so someone will have to step in with exact amounts, but are you offering them in a bowl all night long with a multivitamin and calcium powder mixed with them? Babies and juvis should be given as much as they will eat everyday with lots of vitamins and calcium thrown in.

Good luck.

If he's eating anything on his own at that size, good! Let him eat the 2 mealies a day if thats what he'll take. make sure they are dusted and gutloaded. Keep him well hydrated, and soon he will be eating 4-5 day.

The tail is getting fatter and so is he. I have the mealworms in a container with calcium, oatmeal, and carrots. He will only take two mealworms a day. I try giving him more but he wont eat any. I have noticed that he is doing alot better than when i got him.

Maybe you can try some waxworms also to try to fatten her up. Waxworms have a lot of fat.

(Thanks for the mealworm number insight)

Make sure to offer extra mealies in the dish and try a vitamin powder in addition to or instead of your calcium. I've used T-Rex's leopard gecko dust, but there are other products out there as well.

Another option, and there is a lot of controversy about this, is to offer a light with UVB. In my own experience my geckos grow much faster and larger the 3rd day I switched to a UVB light. Again, not necessarily necessary, but one more thing you can think about.

Sounds like you are doing fine. It also wouldn't hurt in the future to consider taking a fresh poo to the vet to test for parasites, sometimes they can infect animals so stressed and not show signs if someone offers excellent care afterwards. But that can wait until he is up to weight.

I'd prob suggest holding off on the waxworms for right now. Once his tail starts to plump, and he's taking closer to 4-5 mealies. But it sounds like you are doing fine, just keep things real low key for now, and watch him slowly gain weight.

I don't think you are gutloading your mealies enough. give them fresh bones with meat on them to clean. I personally on feed mine gutloaded cricket that are dusted. It should be eating 3-4 3/8" crickets as a hatchling and then every 3 days add couple more and see if it eats them and if it does just keep adding more then u can increase the size of cricket. This has worked for me very well. GL
