Odd behavior/ weather related?

sleepygecko Mar 06, 2008 05:12 PM

Just wondering if anyone else is seeing this or if our girl is just acting up. Our girl is historically very sensitive to weather changes, she's better than our weatherman!

We had a bad cold snap in January and she went into hibernation a few weeks early, but otherwise it seemed normal. She started eating right on schedule (for her new schedule) and ate for 2 weeks. Then we had a horrible storm come through and she was quite agitated by the changes in air pressure. (I thought we were going to blow away myself, -50F wind chills!) Well, she started hibernating all over again and is now sleeping out in the sun every day.

I'm on the fence as to how concerned to be, my boyfriend is definitely getting more concerned by the day. Anybody else experiencing odd weather and in turn odd gecko behavior? Doesn't seem to bother our crested, however to her storms do not equal deadly floods in her world, so I can understand that.

We'll be taking her to the vet if she loses more than a few grams and still isn't eating, obviously. We are just watching her now because an hour drive each way in the cold may do more harm, even with hot packs. I wish we had a closer vet worth going to or that geckos weren't so stress sensitive sometimes, or else we'd probably just go in for a check up to ease the mind.

(Just so I don't do the things I complain about others: our temps are her normals, her weight is holding very steady near 75 grams for her almost 10" length (she's a big girl), she won't case crickets now, but will accept liquid diet. What liquid diet goes in comes out just fine and since she's an albino, visual inspection "xrays" (as showed to us by our vet) show nothing abnormal or blocked like we've seen with parasite infections. She'll turn 3 this year. She is very active and showing all her usual hibernation signs and behaviors. Still only on paper towels, a 20 long to herself, and spoiled rotten. For all her signs she appears to be in perfect health, save for appearing to "hibernate" twice this season.)

I wouldn't woory too much sleepy. As long as she's active(or active for a brumator anyway) and not losing weight, I'd leave he be. I've had several over the seasons go thru several shorter brumation periods, like, for several weeks, then they'll eat for a week, then go back to brumating. Absoltely weather related. He just had several super warm days here (like 60s) and all but one of my brumators woke up and ate. I'd expect they'll stop again if it drops below freezing. The only thing I'd worry about is if you dropped her temps for her cooling, and the temps are too low for her to digest. Otherwise, let her take a ssecond nap. I prefer to sleep thru 50 below temps too lol!

Thanks for the confirmation. I guessed that was what was happening, at least all the signs were there, but not a lot of information out there about troublesome little geckos. But, I suppose, most of the information about paying attention is for breeders.

Thanks again, I just needed to hear it does happen and she's got more than enough excuse this year I'll say. Good luck through your roller-coaster weather as well. We are 20 below the normal average, there are a lot of people who would take an 80 here, even for a day.
