should something this size only be probed? or can they be popped?

You can pop any sized ball. They are a little harder to pop than a young one but can be done. Go to youtube and search Ralph Davis and 8Ball Pythons. Both have good videos on popping and in both vids they do a lot of popping on adults.

Technically, they can be popped, but it's pretty hard compared to popping young snakes. It's usually a lot easier to just probe them.
At least, for me it is. I am not a huge fan of trying to squeeze a snake's genitals out, though.
