Missouri legislation targeting monitors

natsamjosh Mar 06, 2008 10:27 PM

I don't normally post to this forum (I'm a snake guy for now), but thought you guys would be interested in this ridiculous proposed legislation in Missouri:

http://www.house.mo.gov/billtracking/bills081/biltxt/intro/HB1847I.htm

There is also website with a petition against the bill if you feel like signing it:

http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/stop-missouri-house-bill-1847-urgent

There monitors specifically being target for prohibition are "Asiatic monitor, Nile monitor, white throat monitor, black throat monitor, and crocodile monitor, and any hybrids thereof"

I'm sure these monitors would thrive in the Missouri wild.

Thanks,
Ed

Actually, if you read the bill, it's a ban on all "wild" animals kept as pets including all birds. The permits are only so you can keep what you already have until it dies. It bans all breeding and sale of "wild animals."
Most turtles = OK; Parakeets = BANNED
Fish = OK; Fence lizards = BANNED; Frogs = Can't tell yet
Sounds like an animal rights thing. I don't think it has anything to do with protecting wildlife or public safety.
Good luck to those of you living in Missouri.

Thanks for expanding on this, I was just pointing out the monitor part of it since this is a monitor forum. I'm sure extremist "animal rights" activists have some role in this, since the bill really makes no sense.

Thanks,
Ed
