A few questions about my new little guy

powell_baby Mar 07, 2008 09:04 AM

First question... how much are juveniles supposed to eat a day? Can he eat too much or should I give him as much as he wants to eat?

I was also wondering about housing more than one gecko together. I was thinking about getting another gecko. He's at Pet Co which is where I got my little guy. He looks healthy, alert and everything but he came to the store with a stubby tail because it had broken off sometime. Anyways, because he of his "stub" the pet store can't seem to sell him and will be putting him up for adoption soon. He's about the same time as my little guy, a little bit bigger maybe. I really wanna adopt him. I know you're not supposed to house adult male leo's together and you can't accurately sex them til they're a bit older.. So how long can you house them together? Supposing that they are both males.
Thanks for any input.

Let him eat as much as he will. I got a new little guy myself about 2 weeks ago. I feed him 2 Mealies in the morning and about 3 in the afternoon and one before i got to sleep. But I always leave a bowl with them in their cage. Always with calcium and vitamins.

And for housing them together. About 15 grams you will be able to sex them. So keep an eye out on their weight everyday. After you feed. If you have any other questions. Send me an email.

What do you use to weigh your geckos? I attached a pic of my little guy, I'm not sure if it gives you an idea of what he (or she) would weigh. I did check her out though and if it is big/old enough to sex then it's a female.

I have been keeping a few meal worms in a dish for him to eat but he didn't seem to eat much but last night I decided to try feeding him myself. I lowered a meal worm into his cage on a spoon and he came out from his hide box and ate it right off the spoon. He ate about 8 of them throughout the night. I just want to make sure I'm not hurting him by letting him eat too much.

Believe me you can't overfeed young growing leos. They need all the calories and protein they get for growing the first year which is crucial. I would feed him everyday as much as he wants. As he grows and his growth rate slows down, he will eat less and less.

As for the sex, most petstore gecko are females because they like to house them together in one big cage and you can't do that with males once they are older.
