winter time -sav not eating?!?!?!

wisconsin Mar 07, 2008 01:29 PM

hi guys
my little sav ate like a horse when i first got her.
but now she hasnt eaten for about a month.
she was eating fuzzies one or 2 every other day or so----shes about a foot long.
its been cold here (in wisconsin obviously) i was wondering if the savs can tell its cold out [even though she has heat lamps] and it turns her away from eating---she sleeps under her favorite rock a lot more and basks a lot less lately.
basically im just wondering if this is normal to go off food for a while.........
thnaks for all who reply!

Cheese Head
What are you housing it in? A tank, box? Temps, ambient and basking...things like that will help!
Oh and sorry about the Cheese head thing...I can't spell Wisconsin.
Your buddy just to the South.

cold side of tank is room temp around 72 F
basking is around 100F
clean water dish on cold side
she sleeps under a rock kinda in the middle
just wondering if hibernation type behavior is normal

Don't think so Brother!
Try upping the temps in the basking spot to say 130!
What type of enclosure?
Let me guess, a fish tank with a screen top?
Mike
PS, Thanks for having a sence of humor!

To add to what Mike said, that is surface tempature, not air temps.

Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.

monitors don't hibernate, and yours isn't chilling out for the winter. it is simply struggling with poor husbandry and setup.

aside from a better cage setup, including hide spots, you need proper temps.

check out the Sav caresheet at our site, and absolutely positively get a copy of the Sav book by Bennett, available at our site, or here on the classifieds. no other Sav book will do, only the Bennett book will do.

best of luck.
