well as far as i can figure,
"big"
"old"
and
"prairie king"
all seem to be appropriate.
thanks for the second.

Funny!! I've had a similar sign on the wall in my garage for over 20 years. "When I work, I works hard. When I sit, I sits loose. When I think, I falls asleep."

Yeah,......Big ol' dark Prairie King.

From the area you mentioned, it's possible it could also have hint of "rhombomaculata" influence as well, tough to say.

Weird! My first impression is that is cross between a texas rat snake and a bullsnake (well pine snake based on location). I've never seen a prairie kingsnake that is striped like that. Did you keep the snake?

skronkykong Mar 11, 2008 12:23 PM

forgot to add - it certainly does have those googly kingsnake eyes though. Maybe its a striped morph of a prairie king.

from everything i have found, older prarie kings develop this dark, washed-out pattern, and often demonstrate striping. i doubt that she's an oddity or an interbreed as much as just a successful mature prarie king.

i did indeed.
we'll see if she'll eat for me this weekend. if so, she'll probably become a permanent fixture.

have you tried to measure it yet? 3-4 feet?

-eaux- Mar 12, 2008 04:20 PM

haven't tried to hold it down next to a tape measure, but it's easily 4'. kinda letting her settle in (quarantine) for a week or so, then will move forward with feeding. she has a great, low-key, classic kingsnake disposition so far, and i really hope she transitions well to being fed, as mature as she is. once she has (hopefully) established that she can deal with captivity, i'll get an accurate measurement. if she doesn't want to make the leap, i'll release her where i found her.
