Candling Question

toshamc Mar 07, 2008 06:21 PM

So my Gravid WC laid last week 9 eggs and half of them when candled after laying looked unfertilized (bright yellow / no veins)- I recandled them again last night and noticed that all of the "dead" eggs seemed to have something inside of them - sorry my camera couldn't get a better picture but below are two of the best of them - there is a small dark mass and then it looks sort of like there are faint veins surrounding it. I was wondering if these could have been good eggs that were rolled? I know I put them in the incubator the same way I pulled them because they all had newspaper stuck to the bottom. One of them is already starting to mold, another collapsing - so I'm pretty sure they are all dead - but still makes me wonder what happen. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

I don't have the book - if you could give me a quick synopsis I would appreciate it.

In the Barker's book, on page 234, there is a photo showing two outwardly nice appearing eggs being candled. Yours looks like the one they describe as not having well-developed blood vessels, and "the large dark spot and the small blood spot visible in the egg...are evidence that this egg was fertilized at the time of ovulation, but it has failed to develop any embryonic circulatory system and will not hatch."

Of course, if you are ever unsure, just incubate it until the outcome is obvious.

Hope this helps!

From what I se in those pics, they look like unfertized eggs to me. I usually candle my eggs the day they get put into their medium and always see some kind of veins on healthy eggs. As for whaqt went wrong: anything, everything. Most likely is wasn't your doing. These things just happen.
