savannah may be sick help

Tbone21 Mar 08, 2008 02:33 PM

I have a savannah monitor who is about 2 feet long. He is in a homade cage 8x4 feet. Basking spot is 132 degrees and cage air temp is around 85 degrees. He seems pretty active mostly at night and basks all day. He usually deficates in the water tub in his cage but today he deficated on land and it seemed very runny.... any ideas? He eats about two 6 inch rat pups 2-3 times a week.....

I think you're just over-reacting. A little fluid coming out with the fecal matter is normal I'd think. My ackies poop like that all the time. No worries.

You might start feeding it a little more, however. More like 5-6 times per week. Also, you may want to bump the basking temp up to something in the 150s to 160s. Other than that, unless it starts behaving sickly, I wouldn't change a thing.

Cheers,
Ryan

My savannah monitor now seems to not want to eat all he wants to do is lay on his log and bask. When I bring the food with the tongs in his cage he just shuts his eyes and lays there. Sometimes if i leave it there he will take one rat pup after awhile and other times they just sit there. Any opinions?

Like I said above, try raising the basking temperature. Monitors should not bask all day. If they have to bask for a very long time to reach their desired temperature level, that is an indication that the basking temps are too low. My ackies bask for just a few minutes at the most, and then they're off to go dig, eat, etc. They move the pile of boards around quite a bit, so the temps vary under the light, but usually they are somewhere between 150-170.

Good luck with him. If he doesn't start acting normal, consult a good vet.

Cheers,
Ryan
