URGENT-- storing a fecal sample...

OKReptileRescue Mar 08, 2008 10:44 PM

I was cleaning tubs and one of the snakes we recently got in had pooped- looks rather odd--- its part blue.

There is a brown- hot fudge-y part.
there is an extremely hard blue chunk and a smaller smear thats blue as well.
then there is a slight red tinge to the gooey/slime part (blood?!)

then there is the standard white and yellow parts.

I'm GUESSING that teh red tinge is from passing the hard blue chunk... not sure about the fudge chunk...

anyway--- It has the most god awful stench-- stunk up the whole room-- went in to make my rounds and was blown away! so everyone got a good cleaning.

anyway-- i am taking the poo in for a fecal on monday but i dont know what to do with it between now and then--

REFRIDGERATE?
ROOM TEMP?

WHAT TO DO WITH THE POO.... ?

it is on a towel in a zipper bag now...

I didn't know if this kind of thing would "go bad"-- not sure how much worse it can get but... i dont want it growing new things or whatever illness the snake may have to go away (die?) between now and monday if i don't care for the poo sample properly...

conversation i never thought i'd have... many adjectives for one poo...

Beth, that doesn't sound healthy. Refrigerate it. I'm not sure it'll still be good if it goes longer than 24 hours, but I'd give it a shot.

yha--- not sounding healthy to me either!

We've had him about 2 months-- he has not eaten for us. He did poop one other time-- about a week after we got him-- it was normal looking/smelling-- did a fecal then-- normal on the vet side too....

now we have this poo--- and again-- still has not eaten...

It almost looks like that puffy rodent (pet hamster?) bedding that comes in different colors--- its about that size and that blue color.... makes me wonder if he ate a rat that had recently eaten bedding... or something... who knows... it does definatly seem like a forgein object-- i took pics but they're horrible!

anyway--- even if the vet can jsut tell me what the blue thing is-- i'll be happier-- and possibly tell me if what i think is blood- is blood...

we'll see...

Thanks

i'll update

You can actually freeze it instead of just refridgerating it. I know when I have had to take in samples to the doctor they told me to freeze things I couldn't take in right away.

Good luck, hopefully it's just something innocuous.

My Vet has me wrap the sample in a moist paper towel and place that in a zip lock bag. Then carefully pack it and mail it to him. If you have to store it use the fridge. A freezer will kill any nasties you would want the vet to find.

Hope this helps!

I've had snakes poop blue before.

A few years ago I decided to keep a small rack of rats - yep they were in blue cat litter pans - occasionally I'd have snakes poop blue - probably from the rats chewing on the blue tubs - least that's what I'd assumed can't say that I really know - anyway - they are all still here and fine - now that I don't have the rats anymore they don't poop blue. So that's what I'm still assuming.

Sorry can't help you on the poop storage thing.

Good luck!

I had 2 of them poop blue-- i've got another one this morning--- got him with the other-- we actually got 4 BP's from the same guy-- all 4 have pooped twice and never eaten-- 2 of them have the blue poo....

Its in the fridge until tomarrow so we'll see what it is... i put a little on a slide and looked at it at home-- but my scope is a POS so i wasn't able to determine anything besides what poo looks like under a scope...

anywho--- the more i look at it, the more it looks like bedding... but its been at least 2 months since they ate-- they aren't eating here. The guy said they were going off feed but would occasionally eat... i have no idea and i can't get ahold of the guy that had them...

we'll see.

Thanks guys

My gf picked up a female from a local exotic pet store about this time last year. She didn't eat or poo for like 2 almost 3 months and we thought she was just off feed. Eventually she pooped and it was this horrible looking tangle of what we think was fur or possibly bedding but after that she ate fine.

interesting...

One of them has been VERY interested in the rats--- tongues all over them FOREVER-- i stand and hold it for 5 minutes and then i lay it down--- never eaten it though-- just guards it and tongues it....

makes me crazy.

I'll try again tomarrow after the vet...
