Darkening in Cage

GoodSmeagol Mar 09, 2008 01:16 AM

My female has a serious dependancie issue.
She wakes up, bright and cheery, after an hour she will turn DARK, I take her out of the cage within 2 min, bright as can be, running around me. Eating patterns never changed.
Been a week of darkness now, expcept the first 30 min or so after I put her back in her cage, and after that first hour of being awake.
5 days ago, I go, gotta be the cage, so I moved her out of my eleborate living vivarium, into a simple box style cage, with some decoration 4ft x 1.5ft
she is 12 inches 5 months over 4oz, as my scale does not pass 100g(yet)
3 days ago, after no change in her mood behavior, I took out all decorations except a basking rock, and a piece of cork board angled in the middle.
And still... she brightens up when I hold her, or feed her, or move her into my big 4x4 box I let her chill in sometimes, her cage, she goes basks, warms up, and then demands to be held again.
Its a good thing I do not work right now, I can hold her and let her just warm up in there, but geeze, needy lil girl.
Any one else have a beardie like this?

maybe her cage isn't getting hot enough... or it doesn't meet her needs... if she does better in the simpler box. Pictures of her cage would be best... as when I hear the term 'vivarium' I think of a living vivarium, usually with living plants, etc set up to be like the natural environment...see mostly rain forest type vivariums..which are not suitable for bearded dragons (being from semi-arid areas)

i have pothos plants in the cage 1 plant, with grapewine ramps and such, when she darkened i took away some, she didnt improve, i took away eveyrthing but her basking spot, still no change,
the heat is 103 in her favorite basking spot, she retreats to it when i put her in the cage, she warms up, and then darkens and stands and waits for me to take her out...
my male lives in a simular themed cage, he loves sitting IN or ON the pothos plants, and loves the branches.. she just ignores the other 7sq ft of her cage and sits in her basking spot, then standing head up at front of cage darkened... i take her out she sits on me, and is happy and runs aroudn my head on my shoulders, i put her back, she sits content under bask for 30 min, then comes and demands to be taken out again...
the 4x4 runnaround has no basking light, just obstacles, a few brancges build up in the center a bit of a pyramid, she loves it, but always comes back to get warmed up, i swear, she just wants to be held.

Perhaps she is just reacting to the male, if he's in sight of her when she's in her normal cage. OR the rest of the cage is too cold, so she darkens to get warm again when off the basking spot.
