Gecko very excited but wont eat.

Alanna Mar 09, 2008 06:27 PM

Over the past 2 weeks my Leo's appetite has dwindled down to not eating at all. He looks healthy and still maintains a fat tail but refuses to eat. He does however drink. I have tried wax and meal worms and crickets but to no avail. He has however become very excited over the same time frame (2 weeks). He will climb a lot and is spending most of his time looking for ways to escape. Nothing unusual u might say but for my Leo it is. His normal behaviour is to wait for dinner time, eat all in front of him and then spend the rest of the night/day sleeping it off. I am not to bothered at this time but i have agut feeling something is not right as his behaviour (As noted above) is rathere strange for him. Any help/suggestions would be great. He last shed 1 week ago and all is fine there and was pooping every other day up until a few days ago.

Get some Vanilla flavored Ensure. And coat whatever you use to feed it. Then try crickets, mealworms, waxworms.. etc.

Glad my Ensure is making the rounds, however this might just be hibernation for the guy, let's not jump here.

How old is the gecko? If he is of mating age, he could just be looking for a girlfriend, they eat little in that period, but are very active. Pretty normal this time of year. More pronounced behavior in females. My girl surprised us this year by being too sensitive to the weather and is on her second round.

Monitor his weight/ tail fat and give him some time if he is older than a year. If you see any significant weight loss, then it is time for more action.

Apologies but i keep saying ''he'' when in fact she is a she. She is 16 months old now and as i said looks healthy. I lost a Leo to a parasite attack last year and I am concerned that she is going the same way as she has not eaten but it looks like she is just going through a phase. Would you agree?

Also you could try Chocolate Flavored creamer. You can buy a small thing from WalMart for like 2 bucks or so. Works very well.

Respectfully disagree with that one, especially the chocolate.

At 16 months she's an adult. I'd stake good money on she is hibernating/ looking for a mate. During this time she won't eat, but will climb and do gecko laps and just be kinda crazy. Ours is doing the same thing, only twice this year because of the weather. (She had me worried) Monitor her weight if you can, or at least get a visual on her tail fat. If she is acting the way you say, I'd give her 4 weeks start to finish to come out of it. Do make sure you catch her drinking if you can.

We also had our first gecko put to sleep after fighting parasites. He never showed symptoms until it was too late. I can tell you each time our girl does this we still think of that, so it is completely normal. But you should be able to see she isn't losing much weight if any at all. How she does that is beyond me. You can also look at her stomach area, some virgin girls will produce an egg or two during this time as well, but not all. Good luck.
