Inflamed Vent/Cloaca - Help?

snotted Mar 10, 2008 12:09 AM

It seems I am having every problem in the book right off the bat!

Homestar over the past couple of days has started having a swelling of his vent. I kept an eye on it, changed the bedding, scrubbed down the tank, etc. (read that treatment in my book) and it seemed to get worse. I then started a treatment with an antibiotic ointment once a day, and have treated him twice. It is still swollen and oozing and isn't getting better. But I do notice that he kinda sucks it all back in when he's held. Maybe it's a prolapse of the hemipenes? I really don't know. I'll get a picture to you tomorrow. He did poop just fine the other day despite the swelling. Should I keep using the antibiotic treatment and change the bedding every couple of days instead of once a week until it gets better? Help!

If it is a prolapse it could be a few different structures and it is an emergency situation. Until you can get the snake to a vet keep it lubricated and keep it on a sterile substrate like paper towel. Please post a pic asap or take the snake to a vet.

it will help too keep it lubricated and hydrated, also it will help combat infection before you get the snake to a vet.
also make sure you dont use the neosporin with pain relief as it will dope your snake preety good and a sluggish snake is no good.
sterile enviroment is a must just follow what zach said and again get it to a vet. youre only chancing your snakes life if you dont.

That is EXACTLY what should be done in this situation,.....neosporine on clean paper towels, and a visit to a good qualified reptile vet ASAP!
