Bleeding mice?

cyrus7 Mar 10, 2008 04:10 PM

I bought some frozen mice a couple of days ago, they sat in my car over night (it's below freezing in MI) and for about a 45 minute drive. During the drive they defrosted a bit, and when I put them in the freezer the topmost mouse was a soft to the touch. Today, my brother wanted to play a joke on my dad and made him a mouse sandwhich, three of the four mice have blood around their mouths. Is this okay to feed or should I just toss them and buy some fresher mice?

Thanks in advance!

This happens to about 70-80% of my thawed rodents. The thin walled capillaries in the rodents upper respiratory system rupture due to freezing. The capillaries then leak a little blood when thawed. I am sure the rest are fine unless they smell rotten and/or look rotten.

Eat the mouse sandwhich if it tastes ok then the mice should be fine for your snakes.I know, I know, but just could not resist.Mice thawed for a short period of time are ok to feed.Terry
